Landlord meets energy minister ahead of Green Deal roll-out
The Government's energy minister has met with a housing association in the North East which is hoping to offer some of the first Green Deals from next year.
The Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Greg Barker, met up with Gentoo to hear how it plans to make the Government's new energy efficiency and home improvement scheme available to all households across the North East.
Gentoo is one of the first organisations to become an accredited provider of the Green Deal scheme in the UK. It met with Mr Barker at its super energy efficient PassivHaus development in Houghton-le-Spring, to discuss how it plans to help reduce fuel poverty and improve the warmth of the region?s homes through the Green Deal.
Discussions centred around how Gentoo will raise awareness of the scheme and how it will maximise the take up of energy efficient home improvements.
The minister also launched a report, published today by Gentoo, which suggests people in the North East are prepared to pay incrementally for energy efficient home improvements and that such work could help improve people?s lives.
Mr Barker met residents in Houghton-le-Spring who have been part of Gentoo?s Green Deal pilot scheme to see at first hand how their lives have been significantly improved through the installation of energy saving measures to their homes.
Mr Barker said: ?The Green Deal will enable millions of households to improve their homes and save money on their energy bills. It will also create new jobs in the energy efficiency assessment and installation markets, delivering benefits across whole communities.
?Gentoo is really helping to raise awareness of the fantastic opportunities offered by the Green Deal, showing people how energy efficient upgrades can improve the look and feel of their home. ?And it?s great to see how residents who were part of Gentoo?s Green Deal pilot scheme have had their lives significantly improved through the energy saving measures they?ve had installed.?
Gentoo?s report, which summarises the progress of its 1200-home Green Deal pilot scheme to date, explains how 80% of the households it has offered the scheme to have chosen to participate, while at the same time explaining how Gentoo staff offered behavioural advice to households in order to increase their chances of saving money on their energy bill.
Gentoo plans to make the Green Deal scheme available to the people of the North East once it launches in January.
Gentoo chief Peter Walls said: ?The Green Deal presents us with a real opportunity to do the right thing for the people of the region. It has the potential to significantly improve people?s lives, through delivering warmer homes and improving people?s health and wellbeing, while at the same time doing what?s right for the planet.?
The Green Deal, which is set to launch in January, will allow household?s across the UK to reduce their energy bills and improve the warmth of their homes through the installation of energy saving measures such as A-rated combi boilers, double glazed windows, loft insulation, cavity-wall insulation and external wall insulation, without having to pay for them upfront.
As part of a wider visit to the North East, Mr Barker was also visiting the Gentoo-owned solar panel manufacturer ?Romag? based in Consett, County Durham, where he saw at first hand how energy efficiency measures are being made ahead of the Green Deal.
