DALLAS ? On a cooler-than-usual Texas night, Macie Mills wasn't about to let a war on West Nile virus invade her patio time outside a local coffeehouse.
"I grew up with crop dusters in West Texas," Mills scoffed while curled up in a comfy chair.
Minutes later she and a friend watched a small twin-engine plane buzz over a hotel and a popular shopping center. From 300 feet, it dispensed an invisible fine mist of pesticides designed to attract and kill West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes.
Certainly not the renegade dusting of fields Mills remembers from back home, but the stakes are higher in the country's ninth-largest city full of freeways and tall buildings.
"Aerially spraying from a fixed-wing aircraft over cities at night is dangerous and only called upon if conditions are right and the health situation demands it," Joseph Conlon with the American Mosquito Control Association told Yahoo! News.
Dallas is suffering from the nation's deadliest outbreak of West Nile virus this year. Ten people have died and more than 200 others have fallen ill in less than two months, prompting leaders to declare a state of emergency. But aerial spraying is controversial because of safety concerns, cost and effectiveness.
Leaders acknowledged a public backlash, but said they had no other choice.
"I cannot have any more deaths on my conscience because we didn't take action," Mayor Mike Rawlings told reporters.
Aerial spraying hasn't been used in Dallas since 1966, when more than a dozen deaths were blamed on encephalitis.
There is no vaccine for West Nile virus, which more often impacts younger and older people. Symptoms can include headache, high fever, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, tremors, disorientation and paralysis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 43 states have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds or mosquitoes this year. Twenty-six people have died and nearly 700 have gotten sick.
"The 693 cases reported thus far in 2012 is the highest number of West Nile virus disease cases reported to CDC through the second week in August since West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999," the CDC said in a statement.
Nearly half of those sickened have been from Texas, where 17 people have died. With several weeks still left in the peak West Nile season, the state fears it could be the deadliest year yet.
Dallas' increase in mosquitoes is being blamed on ideal breeding conditions: a wet spring in North Texas and the hot, dry weather now settled across the nation's heartland.
"Oh my gosh, a month ago you couldn't sit out in the backyard," said North Dallas resident LeeAnne Revell.
But the push for pesticides by plane hasn't been popular with everyone.
"Aerial poison spraying for West Nile starts in an hour," Kelley in Dallas tweeted. "If anybody needs me, the kittens & I will be hiding in the closet in our hazmat suits."
Not all politicians were in agreement either. Councilman Sheffie Kadane sent a last-minute plea for the mayor to change his mind, the Dallas Morning News reported.
"I implore you to consider natural herbicides as an alternative to spraying," he wrote. "Please do not spray!"
Public health officials and the company in charge of the mission promised that low dosages of Duet Adulticide, the EPA-approved chemical dropped from the plane, is not harmful.
Still, a recorded phone message sent out by the city advised citizens to stay inside during the spraying.
Many heeded the warning, but many didn't.
"Go in and take a shower if it falls on you," said Brad Hobson, who watched the planes outside the coffee shop with Macie Mills. "I figured I'd smell something, but I smell more diesel from passing cars."
Two planes treated 50,000 acres on Thursday before being halted by rain. Several more nights will be required to cover neighboring suburbs.

The United States risks being dragged by Israeli politics into another Middle East war, this time between Iran and Israel.
The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is embroiled in internal political conflict. His Likud-led, right-wing religious coalition government is not required to call new elections until next year. He had nonetheless been on the verge of calling early elections in May but was able to avoid doing so by the agreement of the centrist party Kadima to join Likud in a coalition government. The deal with Kadima collapsed in July.
Mr. Netanyahu, in a mess with Likud not in the majority in the parliament, has been seeking a way to strengthen his position. Unfortunately, he has chosen the question of whether Israel -- or preferably, Israel and the United States -- should conclude that efforts to negotiate with Iran over its nuclear program have failed and Iran should now be attacked.
The U.S. election provides him an opportunity to maneuver, albeit risky. He appears to believe that his policies would receive greater support from Mitt Romney as president than Barack Obama. He has been encouraged in that view by some of Mr. Romney's supporters, including billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson, who visited Israel recently with the Republican candidate. Mr. Netanyahu's relationship with Mr. Obama has suffered from Israeli and Palestinian refusal to work on Mr. Obama's effort, launched in September 2009, to achieve direct negotiations toward a two-state solution of the longstanding problem.
The dilemma for Mr. Netanyahu is that, if Mr. Romney wins, the Israeli leader's policies will likely receive more support in Washington. If Mr. Obama wins, however, the re-elected president will likely react to Israeli attempted interference in the election, particularly with an "October surprise" Israeli attack on Iran, like a cat doused with a bucket of cold water.
From America's point of view, the Iranian nuclear program has been slowed down or even stopped by U.S. and Israeli cyberattacks, assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists and international economic sanctions. Iran is also continuing to seek support in the world arena, including by hosting a conference on Syria and a 120-nation conference of the Non-Aligned Movement at the end of the month.
Most of all, with the Iraq war finished, the Afghanistan war winding down and urgent domestic priorities calling, the United States does not need a new Middle East war. Mr. Netanyahu and other Israeli politicians need to work out their internal problems independent of the U.S. election.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Lenovo Group Ltd, the world's No.2 PC maker by sales, reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit, pushing its shares to a seven-week high, but analysts warned a slower Chinese economy could cut into its performance.
The ThinkPad maker, close to overtaking Hewlett Packard Co for the top spot, has risen quickly on the global PC stage due to aggressive pricing, overseas acquisitions and a fast-growing home market. These rapid gains in market share, however, have come at the expense of margins, with profits growing at their slowest pace in more than a year.
Lenovo, with a market value of $8.2 billion, also faces slowing growth in the market for personal computers and tough competition from the likes of Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd in the fast-growing tablet PC and smartphone space.
"In China for sure they are also affected because as a whole, the Chinese market has softened," said Jonathan Ng, an analyst at CIMB in Singapore.
The booming Chinese market has been Lenovo's main sales driver, contributing around 42 percent of its total revenue, but the outlook is overshadowed by slowing growth that has sapped demand and led to a series of profit warnings by Chinese firms.
Lenovo's unit shipments in China grew 9 percent in the first quarter compared with a year earlier, outpacing a decline of 3 percent in the overall China PC market. The company expressed confidence it would grow faster than the worldwide PC market and was on track to become the leader in the PC industry.
"China's macro economy has shown some uncertainty because of real estate bubble controls and weak exports ... but from a long-term point of view, I'm still very optimistic," said Chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing.
Lenovo on Thursday posted a net profit of $141.4 million for its April-June first quarter, up 30 percent from $108.8 million a year earlier.
The net profit growth was the slowest since the third quarter of fiscal 2010/2011, when the pace was about 25 percent, based on previously announced data, mainly due to lackluster demand in some emerging markets and North America.
Still, the result was better than an average forecast of $131.2 million in a poll of 10 analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, sending its shares up as much as 6.8 percent to a seven-week high.
PROFIT MARGIN
Lenovo's profit margin has been lagging those of rivals such as Dell.
Its gross profit margin was down 0.5 percentage point in the first quarter from 12.5 percent a year earlier due to price competition in emerging markets and China, though it was up from 11.7 percent in the previous quarter.
While there is ample room for growth in China's second- and third-tier cities, lower disposable income levels would likely continue to pressure profit margins, analysts said.
In July, Lenovo and the United States' EMC Corp signed a partnership to develop servers and storage products, with the alliance allowing EMC to expand its reach in China. Analysts said the move was aimed at boosting Lenovo's margins in the long term.
In the first quarter, operating profit in North America was $46 million, against an operating profit of $52 million a year earlier.
In its money-losing smartphone business, Lenovo, which makes LePhone handsets, said it expects to see a profit in coming quarters.
In another move to try and boost margins, Lenovo executives told a media briefing the company aimed to sell more of its LePhones in the open market rather than relying on Chinese carriers because margins are three times higher.
Lenovo, which became the world's No.2 PC vendor in the third quarter of 2011, is just a sliver from overtaking Hewlett Packard as the top PC maker globally.
In the April-June quarter, Lenovo had a 14.9 percent global market share, just 0.6 percentage point away from HP's 15.5 percent, research firm IDC said.
Figures from industry tracker Gartner show an even narrower gap, with Lenovo just 0.2 percentage point from HP.
A series of deals, including acquiring Germany's Medion and forming a joint venture with Japan's NEC Corp last year, as well as its acquisition of IBM Corp's PC business in 2005, also helped Lenovo gain market share.
Its acquisition record has sparked rumors that it may try to acquire troubled handset makers such as Nokia Oyj and BlackBerry maker RIM, though Lenovo has so far denied such plans.
The earnings came before the stock market opened on Thursday. The stock was up 5.5 percent at HK$6.55 at the midday break, outpacing a 0.3 percent gain in the benchmark Hang Seng Index.
Lenovo shares have climbed about 20 percent so far this year, outpacing rivals such as HP, Dell Inc and Acer Inc.
