4 Useful Approaches to Show a Teen How Much You Care

4 Useful Approaches to Show a Teen How Much You Care

It is simple to show a teenager that you care since they are at an age where they are more emotional. Give a shoulder, engage in fun activities, take things easy, and celebrate key events together.

Many teenagers endure rebellious stages in their own lives while they face the inadequacies as well as worries that come with the transition into adulthood. Regrettably, a few teens make the incorrect choices, and these can affect them for the rest of their lives. Show your teenager you care by undertaking these:

Give a shoulder

Misunderstandings typically creep up since teens think you don't care when you are too preoccupied with your very own worries. As much as you would like a person to lend a shoulder to rely on in times of trouble, troubled teens rely on the strength and also inspiration of their parents and closed ones to aid them get through the challenging patches in everyday life. It is simple for them to veer off the right path simply because loneliness and frustration has obliterated their capability to produce the appropriate decisions, and they go to the company of bad buddies and individuals who will take advantage of their easy trust.

Engage in exciting activities

Teenagers associate effectively to people who take the time and effort to relate with them. One of the ideal methods for them to invest all that excess energy is by engaging in sporting activities and other outdoor activities. Try to take some time out of your schedule to be there for their soccer practices, or simply to give some support since they deal with their regular routines. If your teen is not into sports, try to learn what interests him or her, and take the initiative to learn those things together. This is an excellent chance for you to bond with your teen, while giving you that window of occasion to unwind and become a teen again.

Take stuff easy

Oftentimes, parents tend to come down too hard on their teens for little misdemeanors, and these might jepardize and explode into complete rebellion. Whilst the quest to learn and fulfill a teenager's wants is not very simple to start with, you can try to take a more relaxed tactic towards managing the situations as they occur. Have a step back and try to know the reasons behind our teen's actions, and perhaps you will get a much better viewpoint on her or his conduct. Your teenager will also feel that you are taking the initial step towards understanding and also taking care of him or her.

Enjoy milestones

Teens often want to act more adult and also world wise, but the reality is they're still youngsters. Deep down under all that refined up exterior, they're weak and need some attention as much as a cranky baby would. Therefore, particularly if you have other kids in your home, it is vital that you make an effort to commemorate milestones together as a family, so that nobody feels left out. For instance, you can throw an unexpected birthday party for the teenager, or pack the entire family into the vehicle and have a random excursion somewhere new and exciting. Celebrate your kid's achievements, so they feel treasured and understand that they have made you very pleased with all their effort and persistence.

Oftentimes, there's more to becoming a parent than just placing food on the table. Treat your teen right, and they'll turn out alright.

IBM: We're on the cusp of the Quantum Computing revolution (video)

Technology's holy grail is the development of a "perfect" Quantum Computer. Traditional computers recognize information as bits: binary information that represent "On" or "Off" states. A Quantum Computer uses qubits; operating in superposition, it exists in all states simultaneously -- not just "On" or "Off," but every possible state in-between. It would theoretically be able to instantly access every piece of information at the same time, meaning that a 250 qubit computer would contain more data than there are particles in the universe. IBM thinks it's closer than ever to realizing this dream and if you want to know more, we have the full details after the break.

Actor James Woods to testify on RI legislation (omg!)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? Rhode Island officials say actor James Woods will be testifying before a state legislative committee in support of a bill that would allow doctors to apologize for bad treatment outcomes, but ban those apologies from being used against them in malpractice lawsuits.

The Warwick native is set to testify before the House Committee on Judiciary on Wednesday in favor of the so-called "benevolent gestures" bill.

Woods' brother, Michael, died of a heart attack at Kent Hospital in 2006. Woods sued the hospital accusing emergency room staff of not doing enough to save his brother, but he settled the lawsuit after a hospital executive apologized and agreed to start an institute in Michael Woods' name.

Studies show medical malpractice claims decrease when doctors apologize for mistakes and other negative outcomes.

Low Interest Unsecured Loans Could Be Your Finance Solution

Auburn, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/23/2012 -- Prosper is announcing their very low interest rate for unsecured loans from 6.59% APR. These low interest cheap unsecured loans will largely benefit people who are struggling to pay off their loan interest. People who are looking to apply for low interest loans to finance personal items will also find the low 6.59% APR incredibly advantageous financially.

The loan business is uncharted territory for many people. Keeping that in mind, the management team at Prosper has made applying for a cheap unsecured loan incredibly simple. Unsecured personal loans, unlike secured loans, do not require any collateral such as a house or a car which have a risk of being repossessed due to non-payment or inability to pay. Instead, Prosper?s unsecured loans are financed through dedicated investors, and their interest rate of 6.59% is low enough to be paid by even the most financially-strapped borrowers.

Prosper?s low interest unsecured personal loans can be used for a number of different life-changing events. Planning on proposing to your partner or getting married? Your loan can finance an engagement ring or pay for the wedding of your dreams. Have an urge to get on the road? Your personal loan can be used to make a down payment on an RV or finance a much-needed holiday with your family. Buying a new car? Prosper?s 6.59% unsecured personal loan can help you make that first car payment. If your roof is caving in or you just want to remodel your kitchen, you can even get an unsecured home improvement loan.

Prosper is a revolutionary way for people to invest in their community so that everyone can experience financial abundance. Prosper uses peer-to-peer lending, believing that people genuinely want to help others achieve their dreams. Those who have the money to invest do so. Through their ingenious approach to lending, Prosper?s borrowers can gain access to personal loan interest rates as low as 6.59%. Potential borrowers may request loan amounts anywhere from $2,000 to $25,000, and lenders can invest as little as $25 of their own money into the system and make it available for use.

How exactly does Prosper work? After the borrower is approved following an extensive qualification process, the borrower composes a listing describing the nature of the loan they want and what they will be using it for. Interested investors can then invest in the loan and reap the benefits of the borrower?s timely payments. With each fixed monthly payment that a borrower makes on their loan, the investor receives a certain portion of those payments. An investor?s seasoned returns with Prosper earn an average of 10.46%, and the investment process winds up being a profitable cycle for everyone involved.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300

The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 ($295 direct) isn't unique in offering what are usually desktop conveniences in a portable scanner. However it's one of the of the few, along with the similarly priced Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini ($295, 4 stars), that includes both an automatic document feeder (ADF) and the ability to scan both sides of a page as quickly as it can scan one side. In truth, the P-150 outshines the S1300 in many ways, from its faster speed to its smaller size and weight. But the S1300 offers some strengths of its own, including much better business card scanning, to keep it very much in the running.

At 3 by 11.2 by 3.9 inches (HWD), the S1300 is on the large side for a portable, and at 3.1 pounds, it's about a pound heavier than that the P-150. Even so, it's small enough to be reasonably portable or to serve as a particularly small desktop scanner for light duty scanning. The ADF is limited to 10 sheets, which is only half of the P-150's capacity, but it's infinitely better than the one-page at a time manual feed that you'll find on most other portables.

Setup and Software
For my tests, I connected the S1300 to a system running Windows Vista. Set up is reasonably typical. One unusual touch is that, unlike most portables, you can't connect just one USB cable to get it to work. Instead, you have the choice of plugging in a power adaptor also, or plugging in a second USB cable, which means tying up two USB ports.

The software that comes with the S1300 includes a scan utility, a document management program called ScanSnap Organizer, and a business card management program. In addition, an optical character recognition (OCR) module, ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap 4.1, works with both the scan utility and document management program to let you turn scanned documents into editable text or searchable PDF files.

In another unusual touch for scanners in general, the S1300 doesn't come with a driver that would let you scan directly from most Windows programs that have their own scan commands. As I've pointed out in other ScanSnap reviews, most recently my review of the ScanSnap S1100 ($199, 3.5 stars), this is standard for Fujitsu's ScanSnap models. Fujitsu insists on locking you into its own idiosyncratic approach to scanning, which you may or may not consider a problem, depending on your own tastes and work habits.

Scanning
In most cases, instead of letting you scan from within a given program, the S1300 makes you scan first and then send the scanned file to the program. However, if you first define the target application in the scan utility, you can scan and send with one command. As an alternative, you can scan and send the file to ScanSnap Organizer, and then use the commands in Organizer to send the file to a program in a separate step.

With either choice, if you send the file to a word processor, the OCR module will convert it to editable text, if you haven't OCRed it already. You can also set the program to save text files as searchable PDFs, or save them as image PDF files and recognize the text later, either automatically when the computer is otherwise idle, or immediately on command.

Ironically, Fujitsu's own business card program, CardMinder, is the one case that breaks the rule of not letting you scan from within a program. With CardMinder you can either scan first and send the scan to the program, or you can open the program first, and give a scan command.

Test Results
The best that can be said of the S1300's speed is that it's acceptable for a portable scanner. In my tests, using a 10 page document, I timed scanning without recognizing the text, at 5.9 pages per minute (ppm) for simplex (one sided) scans and 11.7 images per minute (ipm) for duplex scans (with one image on each side of the page).

That makes the S1300 a lot faster than any manual feed scanner. On the other hand, the P-150 came in at 10.3 ppm and 19.2 ipm, leaving the S1300 in the dust. The P-150 also took almost no additional time to recognize the text, adding only 4 seconds to OCR 50 pages of text. The S1300 took almost a minute extra to OCR 20 pages.

The S1300's 600 ppi maximum optical resolution is more than enough for high quality document scanning, as indicated by it's scores on our OCR accuracy test. The scanner and software combination read both our Times New Roman and Arial test pages at sizes as small as 8 points without a mistake. As I've already mentioned, the scanner also did a reasonably good job with business cards, reading about half the cards in our test suite without a mistake.

Although the S1300 can't match the P-150 for size, weight, or speed, and it loses points for lacking a standard driver, it's actually a little easier to setup than the P-150, and I suspect that anyone who isn't already familiar with scanning will find the software easier to use than most typical scan software. The S1300 certainly has the edge over the P-150 for business cards, and it's just as certainly a reasonable choice as a highly capable portable scanner. Unless you absolutely can't live without a standard scan driver, the S1300 is, at the very, least worth a serious look.

Small Businesses 'Not A Big Source Of Job Creation,' Say Economists

NEW YORK -- Mitt Romney says they're "job creators" and vows to come to their aid as president. Newt Gingrich visited them on his "jobs and growth" bus tour. President Barack Obama calls them "the engine of our economy."

If there's one thing Republicans and Democrats agree on, it's that small business is the answer to what ails the economy. On these tiny bundles of entrepreneurial energy, they say, rides the nation's hope for lower unemployment and faster economic growth.

But the work of several economists suggests that most small businesses are not particularly adept at creating jobs, at least not the best jobs. The work also suggests their role in generating national wealth has been exaggerated.

The problem is that not all small businesses are created equal. Businesses just getting off the ground contribute most of the country's job growth, but older small businesses cut as many as they add.

Think Bill Gates and Paul Allen huddled together late nights developing Microsoft, not the corner liquor store.

"I don't want to pick on dry cleaners and restaurants and small manufacturing firms, but they're not a big source of job creation," says John Haltiwanger, an economist at the University of Maryland.

Politicians like to say that small companies create two of every three jobs in a given year. That's less impressive when you consider that almost all the 6 million companies in the U.S. ? 99.9 percent of them ? are small businesses, with fewer than 500 workers.

What's more, two-out-of-three masks the fact that most small businesses eliminate more jobs than they create in a given year, either through layoffs, closings or bankruptcy.

And many of the rest, the ones that don't shrink or shut down, don't offer much hope for the millions of Americans looking for jobs.

Many small companies ? outfits like florists, hardware stores and barbershops ? tend to grow with the U.S. population, not faster. So they don't speed the economic recovery the way an exploding new industry might.

According to an August study by two University of Chicago economists, most small business owners just want to be their own boss and never expect to hire more than a few employees.

In fact, the more you study the numbers, the more you wonder what the politicians are getting so excited about.

Haltiwanger and two other economists showed, in a study of millions of companies over 30 years, that small businesses no more than five years old ? that's about 40 percent of them ? are the only ones that create more jobs each year than they cut.

In 2005, for instance, more than 99 percent of the 2.5 million net new private-sector jobs in the United States came from these startups, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

But the 60 percent of small businesses that have been around more than five years act as a slight drag on the number of jobs available in the United States. They have cut about 0.5 percent more staff than they have added in a typical year, according to Haltiwanger.

By contrast, big businesses, the ones that get all the headlines for layoffs, have hired more than they have cut ? about 0.1 percent in a typical year.

Economist Charles Kenny of the New America Foundation, a nonpartisan research group, goes as far as suggesting that Washington should stop offering certain incentives to small business owners, such as loan guarantees and write-offs on taxes for home offices. He says the money would be better spent subsidizing research and development.

"If you want jobs, you have to focus on the innovative firms trying to provide something new and different," he says.

The country's unemployment rate is 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years. But the U.S. still has 5.6 million fewer jobs than before the recession. Assuming the pace of hiring from last year continues, it will take three years to recover all the lost jobs.

Small businesses aren't helping much. They cut more workers than they hired in all but three months last year, and contributed zero to job gains again in January, according to a survey by the National Federal of Independent Business.

To change that record, Republicans say Obama needs to cut federal rules and paperwork that are burdensome for small businesses that don't have human resource departments, legal staff and vast resources like big businesses.

To comply with federal regulations on the environment, for instance, companies with fewer than 20 workers spent $4,101 per worker in 2008, or 4 1/2 times more than companies employing 500 or more, according to the Small Business Administration.

The same study showed these businesses spent three times more per worker on tax preparation than did their larger counterparts.

"As regulatory complexity increases, it's hard on small firms," says William Dunkelberg, chief economist at the National Federation of Independent Business, a group closely allied with Republicans. "We need to get government out of the way."

But many economists think the root of the job problem is deeper.

Again, it's the difference between old small businesses and new small ones, and the U.S. is not creating enough of the new ones.

It was true even before the Great Recession: The number of startups less than a year old was no higher in the boom year of 2006 than it was 30 years ago, when the economy was much smaller, according to the Census Bureau. And the ones that are launching are hiring fewer people, too.

The grim takeaway is that the U.S. could struggle with high unemployment long after a pickup in economic growth.

Even the idea that small businesses play an outsized role in the economy has come under attack lately.

A study from the left-leaning Center for Economic and Policy Research shows that the self-employed worker, that rugged exemplar of the small businessperson, accounted for less of the working population in the U.S. than in the other 20 rich countries tracked, except for Luxembourg.

Another study by economists at Harvard and Dartmouth suggests that might not be such a bad thing because poorer countries are more likely to have a higher share of their workers self-employed.

Adding fuel to the argument, Kelly Edmiston, an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, showed that workers at small businesses are more likely to lose their jobs and less likely to have vacation days, retirement plans and a range of other benefits, including health care. Some 41 percent of companies employing less than 100 people offered no medical insurance at all.

So, myths about job creation aside, why isn't the U.S. launching more startups? The risky economy, regulations or health care costs ? a bigger burden for small companies ? could be scaring them off.

Haltiwanger thinks demographics may be at work. He says businesses are often started by people in their 30s and 40s. So as the population ages and more baby boomers retire, the number of startups falls.

"We're a roll-the-dice economy. It has a lot of spillover effects," he says. "But we're not experimenting enough."

Caring For Oily Skin | New Health and Fitness | jeremypinc.com

New Health And Fitness.Org ? Health Information You Can Use

To begin the discussion on oily skin treatment, it?s vital to first recognize the cause behind oily skin. Put simply, oily skin is caused by excessive production of sebum (an oily compound that is normally produced by skin). As is known to everyone, excess of things are bad; so too much sebum is bad too. It results in clogging of pores of the skin, leading to build up of dead cells and hence development of pimples/acne. Moreover, oily skin spoils your image too. So, ?oily skin care? is just as significant as the ?skin care? for other types of skin.

The normal aim of ?oily skin care? will be the elimination of excessive sebum or oil from your skin. However, oily skin treatment procedures must not result in complete removal of oil. ?Oily skin care? starts off with the use of a cleanser. But, not all cleansers will work. You need a cleanser which contains salicylic acid i.e. a beta-hydroxy acid that retards the rate of sebum production. Cleansing must be done twice daily (and even more in humid and hot conditions).

Many of the oily skin care products are oil-free; but, it is always good to check the ingredients of the product, before you actually buy it. This is especially important if a product is marked as ?suitable for all skin types?, rather than ?oily skin care product?. ?Oily skin care? is also influenced by the degree of oiliness, in case you are not too oily, so some of these ?suitable for all?- sort of products might work for you too. For extremely oily skin, only oily skin treatment products are suitable. Your oily skin treatment regime may include an alcohol based toner (for the extremely oily skin). This can be the second step in your oily skin care routine i.e. soon after cleansing. However, excessive toning may damage the skin.

The next step in your oily skin treatment habit may be a mild moisturizer. Again, the degree of oiliness of your skin will determine whether you have to include this in your oily skin care regimen. If you do decide to include a moisturizer, make sure you use one that is oil-free, wax-free and lipid-free. You could also use a clay mask (say once weekly) as an oily skin treatment measure.

As far as the oily skin care products go, you might need to try out a few before you arrive at the one that is really suitable for your skin.

In case that these measures don?t give you the desired result, consult a good dermatologist for advice. He can prescribe stronger oily skin treatment goods like vitamin A creams, retinoids, sulphur creams etc. , which will help counter the problems of oily skin.

Loy Machedo's Business Management Notes ? Chapter 1 | Loy ...

Analysis of the notes titled
Management in the 21st Century by Tom Brown.

MANAGEMENT BEFORE
? Daniel Wren in ?The Evolution of Management Thought? states to ?Manage? resources effectively is a concept which states back to the Babylonian King, Hammurabi. Even so long back, he had played the role of a manager as he issued 282 laws that governed business dealings, personal behavior, interpersonal relationships, wages, punishments, and societal matters. Wren includes the evolution of management to more familiar names like Chris Argyris, Henry Ford, John Kotter, Elton Mayo and William Whyte.
? Even as early as 600 BC, The Chinese General Sun Tzu struggled to get things done ? Simply, Effectively, Correctly and Immediately.
? The Oxford English dictionary starts the history of Management as early as 1598.
? It was only in 1813 where Robert Owen, the first authority cited in Classics in Management complied a collection of excerpts from the thinkers who most influenced the profession during the formative years.?Even in those days Owen was aware of the potential profits from an investment in new technology, money expended, he says for the chance of increased gain.
? In his 1813 address Owen implored ?to consider whether a portion of your time and capital would not be more advantageously applied to improve your living machines??. He argued that a healthy synergy of workplace conditions (including state-of-the-art technology) and work place humanism (care and attention to living instruments) would yield unheard of profits.?Owen believed staunchly and promulgated this fact to the manufacturers that by following his advice, they too would see many returns of ?not 5, 10 or 15%, for your capital so expended but often 50 and in many cases a 100% increase. He felt the essential challenges for all managers were in 3 distinct issues: Technology, people and profits. Balancing these three elements would result in the winning combination.
? The management gurus who followed Owens management philosophy include The Principles of Scientific Management author Frederick Winslow Taylor, General Principles of Management author Henri Fayol, Freedom and Coordination author Mary Parker, The Social Problems of of an Industrial Civilization author Elton Mayo.
? Management may not be rocket science but it is indeed complex.
? The elements of culture ? Economic variables, Social Norms, Politics and so on have impacted manager?s decisions.
? Jack Welch in his book ?Straight from the Gut? stated: ?In 1981, I said I wanted GE to become the most competitive enterprise on earth?.In the end, I believe we created the greatest people factory in the world, a learning enterprise with boundary-less culture.?

MANAGEMENT TODAY
? July 22nd 2001, The New York Time ran an article by Margo Jefferson focusing on the drama world asked some really interesting questions. The article was titled ?How can the Theatre make itself Matter again.? She replied by stating, Theatre needs new work. It has to catch something of the way we live and now, take in the facts and sensation, show us our minds and bodies as they react and realign themselves. And theater needs to take more risks. Jeffersons words would be very applicable to the business world if the word ?theater? is replaced with ?management?.
? Joanne Ciulla in her book ?The Working Life? states, ?Too many people can?t choose when to go to work and what to do at work. They do not deliberate on management policies or decide how to do the task at hand. Worst of all, many still can?t plan for the future because they don?t know if they will have a job.?
? In ?Blood, Sweat & Tears? Richard Dowkins spent 6 years researching the same subject related to the working life of employees. He stated, ?The more I write, the more I ask myself this recurring question, why on earth do we do it?? He further expresses his confusion by stating ?The craziness is that some of these highly paid individual are working such long hours that they rarely have the opportunity to step outside their jobs and enjoy a moment?s leisure.?
? In the 2007 published book focusing on ?Burnout? Christian Maslach and Michael Leiter stated, ?Burnout is reaching epidemic proportions among North American workers today. It is not so much that something has gone wrong with us but rather that there have been fundamental changes in the workplace and the nature of our jobs. The workplace today is a cold, hostile, demanding environment, both economically and psychologically?.People are becoming cynical, keeping their distance, trying not to let themselves get too involved.?
? Bill Jensen in his book ?Work 2.0? states, ?people (and managers) need to stop thinking about organizational productivity and start thinking about personal productivity?
? Thomas Steward of Fortune and author of ?The Wealth of knowledge? states, ?The modern corporation like modern art, is over. The postmodern corporation is different. It?s more accurate and more useful to think of employees in a new way: not as assets but as investors. Shareholders invest money in our companies; employees invest time, energy, and intelligence.?
? Royal Dutch / Shell?s long time employee, Arie de Geus stated in Business Minds, ?Companies have become trapped in the prison of economic language, which is why so many companies suffer premature deaths?.Companies tend to die early because their leaders and executives concentrate on production and profit and forget that the corporation is an institution?.a community of human beings.?
? Body Shops founder, the late Anita Roddick controversially believed that business was a ?jungle where only the vicious survive?.
? Margaret Wheatley in her book ?Leadership and the New Science? stated that ?management today was stuck?. She added, ?If we don?t? change the way we manage business in the next 10 years, we?re dead?.
? Management thinkers W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne asks top executives on simple question, ?Why would the best people in the world want to work for your company??
? Stanford Professors, Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Stutton who wrote the book ?The Knowing-Doing Gap? attacking managerial schizophrenia whereby they highlighted the core ? why so many managers are so knowledgeable about what achieves great performance yet do things which are contradictory to it.
? Interestingly in the 1960?s publication of ?The Human Side of Enterprise? Douglas McGegor stated, ?Fads will come and go. The fundamental fact of man?s capacity to collaborate with his fellows in the face-to-face group will survive the fads and one day be recognized. Then, and only then, will management discover how seriously it has underestimated the true potential of its human resources.?
? Juan Enriquez eloquently put it in his book ?As The Future Catches you?, ?You can stand on the sidelines and assume fate will guide things?.(God willing?.Si Dios Quiere?.Insha?Allah?..Shikatta ga nai?) Or you can help yourself, your family, your company and country navigate?.This wondrous and scary adventure.?

MANAGEMENT TOMORROW
? Email and Internet are two technological forces that have altered the job of a manager. The question now arises, how do you manage the ?virtual employees? or how to protect your corporate data, which is being accessed by your employees and which is priceless.
? Juan Enriquez, in his role as the director of the Life Sciences Project at Harvard Business School, put up the thought provoking question as to how advances in the Human Genome project would impact business.
? Technology is now proceeding at a pace that may quickly outstrip management?s ability to decide what to do with what we are so rapidly learning how to do.

CONCLUSION
? Robert Heller and Time Hindle noted in ?Essential Manager?s Manual?, ?A full understanding of what makes people perform well and of the problems that may affect performance in the workplace is therefore essential for any manager. He or she will need to employ a wide range of skills, both interpersonal and professional, in order to resolve these problems.?
? There are many challenges that still haunt management circles for instance, how to transfer an excellent manager?s expertise to another company or industry, even with the growth of e-commerce one has not been able to replicate e-relationships or even with the growth of merit, still many work uninspired with no focus on the mission of the company in connection to their own goals.
? Management in the 21st century is still incomplete and imperfect. Someone needs to address the issues at hand. How do you know that person is not you?

Netflix gives new customers DVD-only option again

Netflix

Netflix DVD-only plans are back.

By Athima Chansanchai

Despite its commitment to streaming movies and TV, Netflix is offering its DVD-only service option to new customers again, but will it tempt those who have converted to Redbox?

When Netflix implemented in September its highly unpopular plan to separate its DVD and streaming plans and 60 percent price hike?(which met with vehement social media scorn for days and weeks following the announcement in July), it removed the DVD-only option for new customers, making it available only as an add-on to a streaming plan at sign-up for an additional $8 a month (one DVD out-at-a-time).

For a brief time, Netflix teased (and further irritated) members with the promise of a DVD-only spin-off called Qwikster, but that?never materialized.

Now?a blog post on Netflix's US & Canada blog by?Santosh Hegde, director of DVD engineering, tells us that, starting at that same $8-a-month price, new customers (or those that left and could be tempted to come back) can now "enjoy around 100,000 titles on DVD." They're even giving away one-month free trials.

We've got to ask, is it too little, too late? (Take our poll and let us know.)

By the end of 2011, Netflix's actions?? including the Qwikster debacle ? showed public relations were not its forte. Even after a mass-emailed mea culpa from CEO Reed Hastings, much of the good will Netflix built up over the years with its members turned to hate.

In an annual?Holiday E-Retail Satisfaction index?by analytics firm Foresee,?Netflix practically fell off the customer satisfaction cliff.

Despite a rough 2011, its stock has rebounded?and is up 76 percent so far in 2012, and for the most part, it was able to hang onto its more than 23 million members by the end of 2011. The great exodus threatened by the masses never came to pass, but the company did suffer a significant defection of its DVD subscribers.

Some of Netflix's 2.8 million customers who dropped the DVD plan probably jumped ship to Redbox, which enjoyed an increase of 40 percent revenue in the fourth quarter of 2011 ($446 million). Conveniently, Redbox is now entering into a joint venture with Verizon to pack a one-two combo of streaming and DVDs for customers.

Review: The Playstation Vita, Sony?s Portable Powerhouse

scaledwm.IMG_5695Like a line of hard-marching Lemmings (or a swarm of Patapons), Sony's countless, niggling enemies would like nothing better than to distract and steal the company's hard-won fan base. The Playstation has long been the gold standard in console gaming, despite the Xbox's recent challenges to the throne. And Sony does a good job. Graphics are better, gameplay is or can be more immersive, and in the battle for RPG dominance the PS3's library is peerless. But now Sony is fighting against lots of great ways to waste your time. Stuck in a long line? Whip out the iPhone, RAZR, or Blackberry. Want to play something bigger and bolder? Pull out a tablet and rock a few hours of Civilization Revolution or Need For Speed. Want to watch a movie? Bring up Netflix on any device in the house save your kitchen blender. There's not as much space for a dedicated gaming device out there as there used to be, and both Nintendo and Sony know it.

An 'immortal' devil's genome and the secrets of a cancer that's catching

Friday, February 17, 2012

Researchers reporting in the February 17th issue of the Cell Press journal Cell have sequenced the complete genome of one immortal devil. The genomes of the Tasmanian devil and its transmissible cancer may help to explain how that cancer went from a single individual to spreading through the population like wildfire.

The deadly transmissible facial cancer has led to the speedy decline of the island-dwelling Tasmanian devil population since its discovery and now threatens the entire species with extinction. Ultimately, the researchers hope that the new findings might point to a way to help save the Tasmanian devils.

"There are targeted drugs that work against cancer genes," said Elizabeth Murchison, a Tasmanian native working at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the United Kingdom. "We hope some of the mutations that we have found in genes in the devil cancer may point to therapeutic strategies."

Tasmanian facial cancer disease is spread from one Tasmanian devil to another through bites that transfer living cancer cells, and Tasmanian devils bite each other often. The first photograph of a Tasmanian devil with one of these facial tumors turned up in 1996. "At the time, it was thought to be a one-off case," Murchison said.

But soon, dozens more sick devils turned up, and by the early 2000s, "it was clear that this was a new type of infectious disease," she said. The real breakthrough came in 2006 when it was shown that all of the cancers were actually one, passed on clonally from one animal to another. That was a particular surprise because cancer doesn't usually hop from one individual to another, except in very rare instances. Normally, the immune system ensures that foreign cancers cannot survive in new hosts.

In search of answers and potential solutions, Murchison and her colleagues set out to sequence the Tasmanian devil genome and that of the cancer. Their analyses suggest that the cancer first arose relatively recently in a female Tasmanian devil.

"I call her the immortal devil," Murchison said. "Her cells are living on long after she died."

"The cancer genome has evolved as it has spread through the population, but overall it appears to be rather stable," adds Michael Stratton, senior author of the paper. "The genetic differences between 104 Tasmanian devil tumors from all around the island present us with a remarkably clear picture of how the cancer has spread in time and space over the last couple of decades, which may help with strategies for disease containment."

More than 17,000 mutations in the devil cancer genome have been catalogued, and while that may sound like a lot, it is comparable to the number of mutations found in some human cancers, says Murchison. The task now is to figure out which of the thousands of mutations are most important. Early indications suggest that changes in the immunity genes might ultimately explain how the cancer evades the immune system.

The world has already lost the Tasmanian tiger, which went extinct in the 1930s. "It would be really sad to lose our two largest marsupial carnivores, and within 100 years of each other," Murchison said. Hopefully, the new data will lead to some more definitive answers, and soon.

How Will You Finance Long-Term Care Expenses | Co-Executor PLC

Feb 15, 2012 ?/? By: Kevin Pillion, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: Elder Law

A high percentage of senior citizens are eventually going to need long-term care of some kind. So, if you want to be prepared you are going to have to ask yourself how you will be financing long-term care because it is extraordinarily expensive and Medicare does not cover it.

Exactly how expensive is it to stay in a nursing home or an assisted living community? If you combine the average length of stay with the national average costs involved you could be looking at a figure that reaches or exceeds $250,000.

With this in mind you can see how important is to plan ahead intelligently. One option that is available to you would be to purchase long-term care insurance. This coverage is expensive, but the younger you are when you start to pay for it the more affordable it is. Some people who obtain long-term care insurance later in life take out a home equity conversion mortgage to pay for the premiums.

Another option is to situate your assets in such a way as to be able to qualify for Medicaid. This can however take some long-term planning because of the five-year Medicaid look back period.

And of course, you can simply write a check but to be able to do that you are probably going to have to follow a cogent long-term financial plan for an extended period of time.

If you are concerned about long-term care expenses, the intelligent first step would be to sit down and discuss your options with a licensed, experienced, and savvy Sarasota elder law attorney.

Greece, battling for bailout, finds extra budget savings (Reuters)

ATHENS/BERLIN (Reuters) ? Greece said on Thursday it had found extra budget savings demanded by its international lenders, suggesting a new rescue package is within reach even though acrimony simmered between Athens and its European partners.

Greece is scrambling to clinch the 130 billion euro ($170 billion) bailout at a meeting of euro zone finance ministers on Monday to avert a chaotic default when 14.5 billion euros in debt repayments fall due on March 20.

Euro zone paymaster Germany indicated that a proposal to stagger the bailout and withhold part until after a Greek election in April was no longer on the table.

But a source in the German ruling coalition, speaking after talks with the German finance ministry, said some outstanding issues remained, including the possibility of an ring-fenced account for debt redemption payments and better controls of Greece's efforts to reduce spending.

Athens is coming up against rising frustration among some euro zone members at what they see as a trend of Greek political leaders doing the minimum possible at the last possible moment since the country was first bailed out in 2010.

Critics say the same applies to the euro zone's crisis response over the last two years.

Greek government sources said Athens had agreed with the EU and IMF how to fill the 325 million euro hole in a set of 3.3 billion euros in budget cuts adopted on Monday as rioters torched and looted buildings in the capital.

Two sources said 100 million euros would come from defense cuts, about 90 million by bringing forward some public sector wage reductions and another 135 million would be taken from the health, labor and interior ministries.

European shares recovered losses and safe haven German Bunds hit session lows in response.

The latest bout in the grueling debt crisis is straining relations between Athens and its euro zone partners to breaking point.

Faced with calls for greater scrutiny of Greece's implementation of the deal, one Greek cabinet member lashed out on Thursday, accusing the EU of "sheer blackmail."

"Any other intervention, any new demands by our lenders, will mean they are mocking the country," Public Order Minister and former EU commissioner Christos Papoutsis said, echoing an angry outburst by Greece's octogenarian president over German suggestions the country could go bankrupt.

"Some in Europe forget that behind the numbers are people," Papoutsis said. Union leaders called for a new protest rally on Sunday "to answer all those who want Greece under German occupation."

Analysts say the currency bloc will be in better shape to contain any contagion from a chaotic Greek default in the second half of the year when a more robust rescue fund is due to have been established.

"INSULTING"

Earlier in the day, policymakers were still talking about delaying the bailout, or holding some back, after EU sources told Reuters euro zone officials were studying the option of in order to retain some leverage over Athens, while still avoiding a disorderly default.

"Confidence has indeed sunk to a low point," Dutch Finance Minister Jan Kees De Jager told Dutch paper Het Financieele Dagblad. "Therefore it has been suggested to wait until after the elections because then you can make the commitment with the new government."

A Finnish official, who declined to be named, said: "Only part would be provided (initially) so we can avoid default. Later, post-election, maybe we (would) deliver fuller payment."

But Berlin appeared to have put paid to that idea and an EU source said the proposal had only been mooted as a suggestion and had not won wide support during a conference call of euro zone finance ministers on Wednesday.

A German coalition source, speaking after talks with the German finance ministry, said proposals to provide Greece with bridge financing to cover its immediate debt obligations while withholding the rest of the aid package until after elections expected in April were no longer being considered.

Frustration exploded on Wednesday as Greek President Karolos Papoulias, an 82-year-old veteran of the resistance to Nazi occupation of Greece during World War Two, lashed out at German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble.

Schaeuble, who has likened Greece to a "a bottomless pit," expressed doubt on Wednesday whether Athens would stick to new promises adopted by parliament on Monday as rioters torched and looted buildings across the capital.

"I cannot accept Mr Schaeuble insulting my country," Papoulias riposted. "Who is Mr Schaeuble to insult Greece? Who are the Dutch? Who are the Finnish?"

"Schaeuble Junta," ran a headline in the conservative Eleftheros Typos newspaper, harking back to Greece's painful spell under military rule during the 1960s and 1970s.

LINGERING DOUBT

After the three-hour conference call among the 17 euro zone ministers, Eurogroup chairman Jean-Claude Juncker said progress had been made but made clear some matters remained open on making sure the bailout plan is carried out in full.

"Further considerations are necessary regarding the specific mechanisms to strengthen the surveillance of program implementation and to ensure that priority is given to debt servicing," he said.

Juncker predicted things would fall into place by Monday although any number have deadlines have been set, only to be missed.

Greek conservative leader Antonis Samaras - tipped to become prime minister after a possible vote in April - gave a written pledge on Wednesday to stick to the austerity package, meeting another EU demand, but added that "policy modifications" might be required to boost growth.

A new survey by the VPRC polling company showed Samaras' New Democracy party getting 27.5 percent support, down from its 30.5 percent score in January, but still well ahead of the newly-founded Democratic Left party in second with 16 percent.

Private and public sector unions representing about 2 million workers, or half the country's workforce, called for a new rally against the austerity measures for Sunday.

"We have only one demand now - elections," Nikos Kioutsoukis, general secretary of the country's largest private sector union GSEE, told Reuters.
