(AP) ? The number of people living in the precarious settlements that became glaring symbols of the Haitian earthquake's devastation has dropped below 400,000 for the first time since the January 2010 disaster, according to an aid group's report released Tuesday.

The International Organization for Migration says there are now 390,276 people living in the precarious settlements that were erected in the aftermath of the earthquake.

This figure is down from the high of some 1.5 million people who were staying in the camps six months after the quake. It is also a drop of 7 percent from April.

The reduction in the camp population is attributed to a combination of forced removals, rental subsidies and voluntary departures, but it is not clear where the bulk of the people have gone or if their living arrangements are better than the camp conditions.

A government relocation effort conducted with the migration organization offered people $500 rental subsidies for a year but the project targeted only 5 percent of the camp population.

"As for the rest we don't know," said organization spokesman Leonard Doyle. "A lot of these people we know have pitched tents on the side of the mountains."

Even before the quake, many people in the crowded capital of Port-au-Prince built ramshackle homes on hillsides due to a lack of affordable housing for the poor majority.

The housing issue remains hot. On Monday, more than 1,000 protesters blasted a reported government plan to evict renters from their shanty homes to reforest the hillsides.

The organization's figures were released following a three-day visit by its director general, William Lacy Swing, who is a former U.S. ambassador to Haiti.

home improvement | window treatments

If you live in an older home, you have likely inherited old, leaky windows along with all of the wonderful character details of your house. Granted, putting in new windows is not nearly as sexy a renovation project as say, putting in a large soaker claw foot tub, but it will definitely give you great returns in the long run. And once your new, energy-efficient windows are installed, you?ll likely want to find the perfect window treatments to go along with them so that the room doesn?t feel bare or unfinished.

Updating your window coverings is a great way to bring a new look into your space. You can use blinds, shades and draperies to introduce new colors, patterns and textures that will liven up any room.

Blinds
Horizontal blinds are available in a wide variety of materials and styles: wood blinds, faux wood blinds, plantation blinds, aluminum or vinyl mini-blinds and more.

Shades
If, for some reason, you have to wait on the window replacement in certain parts of the house, cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, add a bit of thermal resistance to keep the cold air out.

Shades are now available in all types of configurations. They can open from the bottom upwards or from the top down, or both. Some have cords and others have discreet little handles instead.

Roman shades are a great way to add color and texture to a room while doing the job of blocking light and providing privacy.

Roller shades are typically used in bedrooms or other rooms where you want to be able to completely block the light and control how much light is coming into the room. Plus, roller shades are simple and unfussy so when you?re raising and lowering your window treatments often, these are perfect.

If you happen to have kids like mine who are up at the first light of day, blackout blinds or blackout shades are essential. Make sure that you are using window treatments that do not have long chains, cords or pulls if you have children in the house, as these are a safety concern.

Curtains/Drapery
Curtains provide a softer look and are one of the easiest ways to bring fabric into a room for as an extra layer of texture. Curtains are available in every color and pattern imaginable and can be used as an inspiration for decorating the whole room.
Hanging floor to ceiling curtains over smaller windows (think basement) is a great way to give the illusion of larger windows.

Heavy draperies are perfect in media rooms since they absorb sound, improving the sound quality when watching movies or listening to your favorite music. In a bedroom, using romantic sheer drapery panels over blackout shades gives a romantic look.

Remember, once you?ve replaced those old windows with beautiful, leak-free vinyl windows, the job isn?t quite done. Choosing the right window treatments will complete the project, provide privacy and finish the look of the room.

?I never meant for this to happen.?

As Mark clicked on the recorder he heard her throat tighten. President Rhee?s voice was steady, but hundreds of interviews had trained Mark?s ear. She was digging in, steeling herself. She was preparing for something painful.

He placed the recorder on the table between them and looked up. Upholstered chairs and rugs decorated the room like an old English library. The furniture must have been fifty years old, but the fabric was not worn or stained like the pieces he was used to. It looked pristine. The silk and velvet caressed his palms. Could this be the self-healing nano-tex he had heard his father talk about? He had thought the stories to be myth. Mark rubbed the cloth again. Where were they?

The President had gone to some lengths to conceal their location. Mark had to change vehicles three times to get there. Just speaking to her was risky, and at one point he had not been sure that he would arrive alive, but Mark was betting that the story was important enough to her to ensure his safety. So far, his gamble was paying off.

Mark inhaled deeply. The room must once have been a kitchen storage locker. The decorations could fool the eye, but they didn?t hide the smell. At one time the room had held cured meats and cheeses, honey, wine, crates of butter. His stomach growled. Mark couldn?t remember the last time he had eaten butter.

?I wanted a chance to make things better. I thought that I would help to turn the country around ? return us to former glory. We needed a radical change. Most of all, I had to defeat Beckman.?

Beckman. Mark remembered the Republican incumbent in the 2016 election ? ?The Final Election?? from his youth. He was everything Rhee was not. Old. Moneyed. An upstanding family man with conservative values. He had run his campaign on his stability. ?Stay the course? his campaign flyers cried. He told the people to be patient ? it took time for policies to make change. His smear campaign against Rhee had been particularly nasty.

Mark studied the President?s tattoos. He wondered why she was telling the story now.

?The race was close. Polls showed that I was leading Beckman by three percentage points, but I was sliding. The environment was going to hell. The water was poison and the animals were dying, but Beckman had managed to increase wages and decrease the price of gas. He did it through some shady dealings with suspected terrorists, but nobody cared. All anybody cared about was the money in their pocket.?

The President?s face contorted in disgust. Mark suppressed the urge to ask how much the furniture had set her back.

?I was getting desperate. We knew we had the youth vote, but it wasn?t enough. We needed to convince people that their lives would be better with me as President. I was unusual, rough. Some people were afraid.?

?So you sent every voter in the US a package of food.? Mark cut in.

The President?s bold political move had become famous. The plan had worked brilliantly. Recession had stretched incomes and environmental catastrophes had increased food prices. The once-rogue candidate had given voters? something tangible to show that she understood them, cared about them. Just one week after the food deliveries began, President Rhee rose in the polls to a lead of 65%. She won easily.

?We spent nearly every dollar we had on that food. But it worked.?

?I remember that box. It had some tasty stuff.?

The President?s face grew cloudy with an expression that Mark couldn?t read. She looked past him for a minute, then came back.

?Yes, we made sure of that.? She said quietly. Rhee hesitated. ?It wasn?t just the food, but what was IN the food.?

?Yes! The vitamins and minerals. My parents were so excited that I actually ate it.? Then, recognizing that the confession made him sound like a child, ?Must have really helped out those families having a hard time.?

The President turned toward Mark, looking straight at him for the first time.

?Are you familiar with the work of Professor James Leeds??

Where was this going? ?Uh, no, I don?t believe so.?

?I suppose you wouldn?t be. He wasn?t well-known even back then?Back when the election was close, when it looked like it might have been slipping away, one of my young campaign promoters suggested that I speak to him, said that he thought I might find his work interesting. ?

?And what work would that be??

The President rubbed an imaginary spot on her chair. ?Gut bacteria.?

?Gut bacteria??

?Did you know that your body harbors more bacteria cells and DNA than human cells and DNA? Ten times more??

?No. I don?t believe that.?

?It?s true.?

?What does all of this have to do with your campaign??

The President pretended not to hear his question.

?Even more creepy, Leeds? work showed that these bacteria affect the people they populate. They influence immunity, body weight, even?the mind.?

?The mind? What? Are you telling me that you think we are controlled by bacteria in our gut? Like robots?? Mark?s tone bordered on condescension. He was sure that the woman had gone batty.

?Not in a ?left turn, right turn, smile? sort of way. They INFLUENCE us, make us more likely to do one thing or another. Do you remember what else the food said it had??

Mark shook his head.

?Probiotics.?

?Probiotics. Like in yogurt? For, ah, regularity??

?Probiotics are live bacteria. And yes, they can improve regularity, but that?s not why we added them. We added them?? Rhee?s previously pained eyes gave away a glint of pleasure as she remembered her former power, ?for mind control.?

For a fraction of a second Mark looked at The President with his mouth half open. Did she just admit to engaging in mind control to win the election? He had eaten this stuff. Her mind had to be slipping. You can?t control someone?s mind with yogurt. Can you?

?Gut bacteria influence the mind. The mind influences decisions. Decisions influence votes.? We thought, ?What if a political candidate harnessed this power? It wouldn?t take much ? just a few percentage points. So Leeds and I cooked up some bacteria that increased what he called ?tolerance for risk.? Remember I was the unknown ? wild, young, dangerous. We wanted to make sure that people weren?t afraid to take a risk at the polls. Turns out that there were already bacteria that could increase risk tolerance, we just?enhanced them a little.?

She took a breath. ?When we won we had no way to be sure that the bacteria had worked. The food itself was pretty compelling, and Leeds had told me that it would be difficult to replace the bacteria that people already had even though he developed a particularly hardy strain. He estimated that it would only take in something like 2% of the people who ate our food. So, I mostly forgot about it and got to the job of running the country.?

Mark sat almost in a daze, aware and not aware of the silence between them. Then he remembered what had happened just three years into The President?s term. ?Until.?

?Yes, until. Turns out that risk tolerance doesn?t only translate at the polls. At first it just seemed like a run of bad luck ? exploding mortgages, wall street megalomania, social and environmental apathy, an uptick in accidents, murders and suicides ? all bad news, but they could be explained away. These things had happened before. After two years though, it started to seem like nothing we did made it better, so I called a few statistician friends to look into it. They confirmed that this was a trend unlike anything that we had seen in recorded history. I knew what had happened. The bacteria had destabilized the country.?

Mark waited. The President took a breath.

?And of course, the people always blame the leader. Only this time they were right.?

When the rioting started The President had tried to declare martial law, but she had waited too long. The military itself had grown beyond her control. Since then she had gone into hiding and the country had been ruled by a series of ineffective mafia lords. Most recently, each state had seceded to become an independent country. Some measure of stability had returned, but stability doesn?t instantly bring prosperity. After the revolt other countries afraid of similar uprisings cut ties to the US. Halted trade had plunged the country into depression that it didn?t seem to be able to claw its way out of.

?But I thought you said that the bacteria would only take hold in 2% of the population. That couldn?t have been enough to cause such a huge movement.?

?Initially yes, but it seems that life finds a way to survive. Infants and those who have recently received antibiotics are particularly susceptible. Like I told you, we engineered a tenacious strain. Leed?s research tells us that every time it had an opening, our strain moved in. Infants grow up. People get sick and need medicine. Natural selection is moving it forward. Now we believe that as much as 85% of the population harbors these bacteria.

?Why are you telling me this??

?I need you to tell this story to the country.?

?Why??

The way The President looked at Mark made him shiver.

?There?s something else.?

?Oh God.?? There was more?

?I felt responsible for this. I had wanted to IMPROVE the country, not plunge it into lawlessness and depression. So again I sought Dr. Leeds to find some kind of cure. I had to kill this thing that we had created. We came up with the idea of using a virus to attack the bacteria. To reduce the chance of it evolving some kind of defense we engineered the virus to only shut down the part of the bacteria we cared about ?its ability to increase risk tolerance. We wanted to bring people back to their normal state.?

?But you already screwed up. Why do this again??

?We thought we had it this time. We tested it in animals, then ourselves. Finally we released it out into the population.

?It didn?t work??

?It worked perfectly. The problem was the human brain.?

?The brain??

?We knew that the bacteria changed behavior, but we didn?t think about how. The brain of infected people ENJOY taking risk. They find it pleasurable. To them it?s like eating chocolate, having sex, enjoying dinner with friends. Taking risks flooded the brain with pleasure signals ?so many that the brain acclimated to it. When we took it away, people became unable to feel pleasure of any kind, then they lost the ability to feel any kind of emotion. They became shells.?

Mark realized that his fingernails had been digging into his palms.

?How do you know this??

?Leeds. He?s gone. He?s been sitting over there the whole time.?

Mark jumped three feet out of his chair. He hadn?t noticed the figure of a man sitting in the corner behind Rhee. The figure hadn?t moved.

Rhee ignored his reaction and kept talking: ?More robot than a man. I?m next.?

Mark finally identified the look that had been playing across the President?s face during the entire interview. It wasn?t remorse, or sadness. It was fear.

?You have to tell the story so that someone can find a cure. The virus is working its way through the population. Have you seen reports of children? Increases in social disorders ? it?s the virus.?

Mark looked at the President in disgust. She had caused this ? had caused everything ? and in a few weeks she wouldn?t care.

?You have to run the story before it takes hold of the entire US. Before the symptoms manifested in Leeds he was working on a vaccination. You will give his notes to the CDC. Maybe they can figure out what he was working on. People will need to have fecal DNA tests to see if they have the bacteria, and then a vaccination once the CDC creates one. You will have to convince people that this is one shot they cannot skip. Will you do this??

?I will certainly try.?

Mark looked down at his recorder. He was going to have some story to tell. As he checked the power a movement caught his eye.

?The President raised something heavy and metallic.

Mark jumped toward her, overturning the table with the recorder.

BAM!

Mark?s ears screamed in protest as his hand sunk into something fleshy and wet.

Leeds had tilted his head slightly in reaction to the sound.

The bright red blood that pooled on The President?s chair rolled off onto the floor. The upholstery remained unblemished.

Leeds finally spoke: ?Someone is going to need to clean that up.?

Tropical Storm Debby Forms in the Gulf of Mexico? Saturday Update 4pm

June 23, 2012 by WVUA Weather

Good afternoon! Tropical Storm Debby has formed this afternoon in the Gulf of Mexico. The track above could change. Some data tracks Debby to the north or northeast over the coming days. If you have plans along the Gulf Coast this weekend, you?ll need to stay updated on the latest information. Debby could become a hurricane.

AIRCRAFT RECONNAISSANCE?SATELLITE?AND BUOY DATA INDICATE THAT THE CIRCULATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE AREA OF LOW PRESSURE IN THE GULF OF MEXICO HAS BECOME SUFFICIENTLY DEFINED TO CLASSIFY THIS SYSTEM AS A TROPICAL STORM.? THE INITIAL INTENSITY IS BASED ON A HIGHEST 1000-FT FLIGHT-LEVEL WIND OF 61 KT AND SFMR WINDS NEAR 45 KT.? THESE WINDS ARE ONLY OCCURRING TO THE EAST OF THE CENTER.

DEBBY IS MOVING SLOWLY NORTHWARD?OR 360 DEGREES AT 5 KT.? THE CYCLONE IS IN A WEAK STEERING ENVIRONMENT BETWEEN TWO MID-LEVEL RIDGES LOCATED OVER THE GREATER ANTILLES AND THE SOUTHERN UNITED STATES?AND DEBBY IS NOT EXPECTED TO MOVE MUCH DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.? THE TRACK GUIDANCE IS SPLIT IN TWO BRANCHES?WITH THE GFS AND GFDL SHOWING AN EASTWARD MOTION ACROSS FLORIDA?AND THE REST OF THE MODELS BRINGING DEBBY WESTWARD ACROSS THE NORTHERN GULF TOWARDS TEXAS.? EVEN THOUGH THE DETERMINISTIC GFS SHOWS AN EASTWARD TRACK?MORE THAN HALF OF THE GFS ENSEMBLE MEMBERS ARE IN AGREEMENT WITH THE WESTWARD-MOVING MODELS?MAKING THE WESTWARD SCENARIO SEEM MORE LIKELY.? IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE TOO THAT THE ECMWF MODEL SHOWS A FASTER WESTWARD MOTION THAN INDICATED IN THE NHC FORECAST?SO IT IS POSSIBLE THAT DEBBY COULD REACH THE COAST EARLIER THAN INDICATED.

DEBBY IS CURRENTLY A SHEARED CYCLONE WITH NEARLY ALL OF THE DEEP CONVECTION LOCATED IN A CURVED BAND TO THE EAST OF THE CENTER. HOWEVER?AN UPPER-LEVEL LOW OVER THE NORTHWESTERN GULF OF MEXICO IS FORECAST TO DIG SOUTHWESTWARD?WHICH WILL RESULT IN A DECREASE OF VERTICAL SHEAR AFFECTING THE SYSTEM?AND A GREATER CHANCE OF INTENSIFICATION OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS.? BECAUSE THE OFFICIAL TRACK FORECAST IS SO DIFFERENT FROM THE GFS SOLUTION?THE GFS FIELDS USED BY THE SHIPS AND LGEM MODELS ARE NOT LIKELY TO BE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED BY DEBBY.? THE NHC FORECAST THEREFORE SHOWS MORE STRENGTHENING THAN INDICATED BY THE INTENSITY GUIDANCE.

DEBBY IS THE EARLIEST 4TH STORM IN THE HISTORICAL RECORDS? SURPASSING HURRICANE DENNIS OF 2005?WHICH BECAME A TROPICAL STORM ON JULY 5TH.

Isle of Wight Festival Gets Soaked; Africa Oy? Festival

Isle of Wight fans arriving at the grounds. Photo Credit: Isle of Wight Festival FB

The Isle of Wight Festival, one of the oldest and most popular events in the UK, is running into major challenges after a torrential downpour resulted in massive traffic jams, mud soaked campgrounds, and suspended ferry service. Fans slept in their cars while during the wait, while others have been giving up. But with a lineup that includes Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Petty, expect festival fans to?persevere?through a soggy weekend.

What about refunds? Festival promoter John Giddings alluded to them on BBC Radio, but that rumor has been firmly?shut down?on the official Isle of Wight Facebook page:

There are lots of rumours circulating about ticket refunds and we just wanted to clarify. The situation has now been resolved and it is possible for everyone to access the site, enjoy the Festival and the music.

The strong rain also caused the cancellation of the the Africa Oy? Festival, a free festival of African Music. From the website:

We are very sad to have to announce that due to heavy rain over the last few nights causing several Health and Safety issues in the set up of the festival site as well as the potential accidents that could happen over the weekend because of the weather, Africa Oy? has been forced to cancel this weekend?s festival in Sefton Park.

Among Latinos, Mitt Romney Trumped By Barack Obama's Immigration Message

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama faced off -- a day apart -- this week in an attempt to woo Latino voters and address their policies on immigration.

Judging by the candidates' receptions from crowds at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials conference, Obama won. He appeared more relaxed, got more applause, and was more insistent on the need for immigration reform.

It wasn't that Romney was entering a lion's den. Although a majority of Latinos are Democrats, most members of NALEO serve in non-partisan positions, no matter their personal opinions. His reception was warm, but not overwhelming, and paled in retrospect to the previous greetings for fellow Republicans Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R).

Obama brought the crowd to its feet several times Friday, as he talked about immigration reform, health care and education. He enacted a policy last week that many Latinos had long called for, halting deportations of some young, undocumented immigrants.

He was greeted like a "conquering hero," tweeted Ana Navarro, who served as national Hispanic co-chair for GOP presidential candidate John McCain in 2008.

"Obama giving my Democrat colleagues a lot more to work with, than Romney gave me yesterday at ?#NALEO?," she tweeted. "It ain't going to be easy, folks."

One problem, some attendees said, was that Romney glossed over the issues of undocumented young people, saying only that he favored major reform.

Matt Barreto, a pollster with the non-partisan firm Latino Decisions, said Romney's speech was good but had telling omissions.

"He sort of cherry-picked the immigration ideas that are very popular," Barreto said Thursday. "It doesn't sidestep the larger issue, and the larger issue is, what is your policy [on undocumented immigrants] going to be, and what about this insane idea of self-deport?"

Miami-Dade County school board member Raquel Regalado, a Republican, said she wanted more details from both candidates on a number of immigration issues. She is still undecided on who to vote for, but said she was glad to get "a little bit more information than the usual soundbite."

"I did like the fact that [Romney] came out and said something," said another Republican, Tony Rosado, the mayor of Mascotte, Fla. He added that Democrats have only discussed the Dream Act, while Romney laid out a more expansive plan.

Even Democrats gave Romney credit for taking on the issue of immigration in a more pro-reform way. Attendees from both parties said Romney is making the right call by backing away, at least rhetorically, from the hardline talk he employed on immigration earlier in the campaign.

Janet Murguia, president of the non-partisan National Council of La Raza, said, "it felt like he was starting to pivot to talk with some more specificity" on immigration reform. "The question is whether he will be successful in the pivot here."

That remains the big "if" here. His campaign has furiously released statements -- six in barely more than 24 hours -- from Latino supporters, such as Reps. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho) and Quico Canseco (R-Texas), all discussing the economy.

Romney likely would have rather talked about the economy, too. It has been the focus of his campaign messages to Hispanic voters, who usually rank it at the top of their priorities and have suffered higher-than-average unemployment.

Bush skipped over immigration entirely in his speech Thursday, opting to discuss education instead, and when Rubio spoke Friday, he said he felt pushed to talk about immigration because of the president's recent directive halting deportations of some undocumented young people.

"I've abandoned my hopes of only talking about the economy and jobs, as important as that may be, for one moment and one day in the hopes of speaking to you about the issue of immigration," Rubio said.

Chicago alderman Rey Colon, a Democrat, said Romney's speech took a better tone than his previous remarks on immigration, but he was concerned by some of the "trigger words," such as a reference to high-tech border fencing, that might point to increasing enforcement rather than broader reform.

Still, he said he was glad he was able to hear from Romney. "I always think, maybe I drank the Kool-Aid and I need to hear a different perspective on things," Colon said.

Democrat Steve Castaneda, the deputy mayor of Chula Vista, Calif., said that some of Romney's ideas on immigration are good ones and likely will appeal to Latino voters. "The problem is getting Latino voters, or at least the majority of Latino voters, to believe him," he said.

Tech Meets Geo-Tech: Russia?s Search Giant Yandex Takes $1M, 25% Stake In Seismotech

oil rigYandex may be seen as the anti-Google by pursuing a strategy for growing its search-portal business in Russia and adjacent countries rather than aggressively expanding worldwide, but it is using another route to extend its reach: through investments. Today it confirmed that it has taken a strategic, 25 percent stake in Seimotech, a Russian geophysical exploration company, for $1 million. This represents the first investment of its kind for Yandex, which has otherwise limited its funding activities to tech companies in areas like e-commerce and new technology. (It was one of the early backers of?Face.com, the facial recognition company that this week officially?got bought by Facebook.) At heart, it is a strategic, big-data play: as part of the deal, Yandex says it will be providing computing resources and proprietary technologies for Seimotech to use in its analysis mapping seismic data for purposes like oil and gas exploration.

10 FAQS: About the Senior Move Manager - Dawson Relocation ...

1. What is a senior move manager?

A senior move manager is a professional who has the experience, availability, organizational skills and resources to make the move run efficiently. Most importantly, the manager has the know-how and objectivity to help with what can be a very emotional process of sorting through possessions.

2. What does a senior move manager do?

The senior move manager can assist you with all or some of the many tasks involved in making the move as smooth and as stress-free as possible. She can provide direct and supervisory support for every aspect of your moving project, from coordinating house staging with a real estate agent, to creating floor plans, sorting and organizing, arranging for sales and donations, and then of course setting up the new home after the move.

3. How far in advance of my move should I contact a senior move manager?

Since moving can be a complex project, the earlier you contact a senior move manager, the more she can help you and minimize your stress and burden. Advanced planning also allows more opportunity for auctions or sales of valuable items, coordinating with a real estate agent for staging the house effectively, and even booking movers and other services at the most desired times.

4. How do you work with family members who may not entirely agree on the decisions to be made about the move?

A senior move manager is trained to provide guidance and facilitate effective and calm decision making under the pressure of short timelines and different points of view among the family members. The senior move manager listens carefully to all the stakeholders, weighs the needs and desires of the client, and promotes a course of action that achieves results that balance practicality with the client?s desired results.

5. How much will a senior move manager add to my moving costs?

The senior move manager does add costs to the move that depend greatly on the size of the project. However, the more complex a move, the more a senior move manager can save the client in time and money by bringing efficiency, experience and speed to each step of the process. This can save hours of time charged by movers, avoid needless expenses of moving items that won?t fit in the new home, and particularly help out-of-town family members minimize travel and time needed in town to assist with the move.

6. How do I know if a senior move manager is right for me?

A senior move manager can provide a free initial consultation to discuss the project and determine how she can provide services to support your needs.

7. Can I choose which services I want help with and pay only for these?

Yes. Typically a move manager will, after an initial consultation with the client, prepare an estimate for each possible aspect of the move.? She can provide as little or as much support for your projects as you desire, as she has considerable experience that can save you money and free you up to focus on the elements of the project you plan to handle yourself or with the help of family and friends.

8. ?What if my family and I are able to do most of the work of the move to save expenses, but need some help with the move?

Have an open and direct conversation during the initial consultation with the senior move manager. This is the best way to address budget and concerns so that she can help you structure the project to meet your needs.

9. How is working with a senior move manager different from the pack-and- move services of a moving company?

A senior move manager is much like a general contractor for you project, with particular training and expertise working with seniors and their families.

While packing services can be provided by a moving company, when the senior move manager provides these services, the packing and unpacking reflect the clear needs of the client. After the move, clients are delighted to find all their belongings carefully placed in their new homes exactly where they desired, with no detail overlooked ? even the clocks are set and electronics set up and working. This relieves the stress of the move and allows the clients to more quickly settle in to their new homes.

10. Can a senior move manager help us with a house sale/auction for valuable items we can?t take with us?

A senior move manager often provides assistance with sales and auctions of valuable items not being moved to the new home. Sometimes this might take the form of direct help, and can involve identifying local resources to handle such tasks. The senior move manager maintains professional connections with a wide range of experts who can meet the various needs of her clients.

Avian flu viruses which are transmissible between humans could evolve in nature

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? It might be possible for human-to-human airborne transmissible avian H5N1 influenza viruses to evolve in nature, new research has found.

The findings, from research led by Professor Derek Smith and Dr Colin Russell at the University of Cambridge, were published June 22 in the journal Science.

Currently, avian H5N1 influenza, also known as bird flu, can be transmitted from birds to humans, but not (or only very rarely) from human to human. However, two recent papers by Herfst, Fouchier and colleagues in Science and Imai, Kawaoka and colleagues in Nature reveal that potentially with as few as five mutations (amino acid substitutions), or four mutations plus reassortment, avian H5N1 can become airborne transmissible between mammals, and thus potentially among humans. However, until now, it was not known whether these mutations might evolve in nature.

The Cambridge researchers first analysed all of the surveillance data available on avian H5N1 influenza viruses from the last 15 years, focusing on birds and humans. They discovered that two of the five mutations seen in the experimental viruses (from the Fouchier and Kawaoka labs) had occurred in numerous existing avian flu strains. Additionally, they found that a number of the viruses had both of the mutations.

Colin Russell, Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, said: "Viruses that have two of these mutations are already common in birds, meaning that there are viruses that might have to acquire only three additional mutations in a human to become airborne transmissible. The next key question is 'is three a lot, or a little?' "

The scientists explored this key question using a mathematical model of how viruses replicate and evolve within a mammalian host and assessed the influence of various factors on whether the remaining three mutations could evolve in a single host or in a short chain of transmission between hosts

The factors that increased the likelihood of mutations evolving are:

1. Random mutation. The replication mechanisms of influenza viruses don't make perfect copies. On average, every time an influenza virus replicates itself it makes approximately one mutation somewhere in the genome of each new virus. In each infected human there will be billions of viruses, and thus with many viruses replicating, multiple mutations can accumulate within a single host.

2. Positive selection. If some of the remaining mutations help the avian virus to adapt to mammals, then those mutations will make the viruses more fit and thus will be positively selected and preferentially accumulate.

3. Long infection. The longer someone is infected and producing new viruses, the more time there is for mutations to accumulate.

4. Functionally equivalent substitutions. The sets of substitutions identified by Fouchier and Kawaoka are unlikely to be the only combinations of substitutions capable of producing an aerosol transmissible virus. The probability of emergence increases with the number of combinations.

5. Diversity in the within-bird virus population. Given all of the mutations there are likely to be within a host due to random mutation, it is possible that the viruses from a bird that infect a human might have a mutation that would not be detected by routine surveillance. For example, if 100 virus particles from a bird infect a human and one of those particles had a key mutation, it would increase the probability of the mutation reaching high levels within a host even though routine sequencing would not detect it.

6. Transmission between mammals. If mammals are capable of transmitting viruses that have some but not all of the necessary substitutions it could increase the probability of an airborne transmissible virus evolving.

The factors that decreased the likelihood of mutations evolving are:

1. An effective immune response. An effective immune response would shorten the length of an infection and thus decrease the time available to accumulate mutations.

2. Deleterious substitutions. If any of the substitutions necessary for airborne transmission were harmful to the virus it would, on average, slow the accumulation of mutations.

3. Order of acquiring mutations. It is not currently known if the mutations for airborne transmissibility need to be acquired in a specific order. If they do, it would, on average, slow the accumulation of mutations.

"With the information we have, it is impossible to say what the exact risk is of the virus becoming airborne transmissible among humans. However, the results suggest that the remaining three mutations could evolve in a single human host, making a virus evolving in nature a potentially serious threat," said Derek Smith, Professor of Infectious Disease Informatics at the University of Cambridge. "We now know that it is in the realm of possibility that these viruses can evolve in nature, and what needs to be done to assess the risk more accurately of these mutations evolving in nature."

The scientists recommend the following activities be considered high priority for estimating and ameliorating the risk of emergence of aerosol transmissible H5N1 viruses.

First, additional surveillance in regions where viruses with airborne transmission enabling substitutions have been observed and in regions connected to those regions by bird migration and trade. Also, increased surveillance for mutations that might have the same function as those found by the Fouchier and Kawaoka labs.

Second, related to surveillance, some targeted sequencing of H5N1 viruses should be done by "deep sequencing" where the lab sequences many viruses from an individual host to look for viruses that might have accumulated the critical mutations, even if those viruses are just a small proportion of the viruses within an animal.

Third, further investigations are needed to determine which substitutions and combinations of substitutions that are not the same as, but have the same function as, the substitutions identified by the Fouchier and Kawaoka labs are capable of making viruses airborne transmissible between mammals.

Fourth, further studies are needed to elucidate the changes in within-host fitness and between-host transmissibility associated with each airborne transmission enabling substitution and combination of substitutions.

Professor Smith added: "The situation is similar to assessing the risk of an earthquake or tsunami. We don't know exactly when and where, but by increasing monitoring and research -- some of which is already underway -- scientists and public health officials will be able to increase the accuracy with which the risk can be assessed and to minimise those risks."

The research was funded by multiple sources including the European Commission through framework 7 grants EMPERIE and ANTIGONE, the Royal Society, the Human Frontiers Science Program, the Wellcome Trust, and the National Institutes of Health.

NEW YORK (AP) ? San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker is suing a New York City club and its operators for $20 million over a scratched cornea he says he suffered during a fight involving singer Chris Brown and members of hip-hop star Drake's entourage.

The suit was filed in State Supreme Court in Manhattan on Thursday. It says the W.i.P club in SoHo and its operators were negligent in security and supervision, which allowed the fight to take place.

Chris Brown, his girlfriend and his bodyguard were among eight injured during the fight inside the club last week. Police say members of Drake's entourage stopped Brown as he was leaving. The fight escalated and bottles were thrown.

There was no answer at phone numbers listed as affiliated with those named in the lawsuit.

Identify And Adopt Other People's Good Habits

good habits - healthy food
We are unique in each and every way. But as time progresses and we are more than eager to embrace individuality and self-improvement, we find that one of the things in which we truly differentiate are the good habits that we implement in our lifestyle. They happen to shape the way we function, the way we perceive and think, the way we are.

And even though shared between many, make no mistake that good habits are indeed a stamp of individuality. How so? For instance we perform them differently than the guy before us, and bring out of them what we want the most for ourselves.

But the interesting thing here is that even though they mark individuality, we can benefit a great share by peeking into the life of others and try to adopt some of their good habits.

Why not learn from each other what is already out there?

When it comes to implementing things in our life and trying to turn them into good habits, I?m just the same as the next guy. Sometimes maybe even preoccupied with the idea of personal growth and self-improvement I go round the clock looking for new ways to try and make some difference in my life.

I?m making schedule that meets my needs and expectations, try to improve myself by constantly trying to find new good habits, being unique to a great extent.

Take for instance a habit of mine that I recently implemented. Every time before going to sleep I sneak in the backyard and in that solitude water the lawn. It?s quiet, I?m able to easily reminisce through what happened during the day, leave my worries drift away as I hear the sound of the water drops splashing against the grass.

This whole thing makes my stress levels drop instantly before I go to sleep regardless how stressed and tense I am.

But enough about me. I guess you don?t want to go that personal. Or wait a minute, maybe we should. Yes, maybe we should go personal. We should definitely change our approach towards forming and maintaining good habits from more individualistic and self-centered, towards more social and interpersonal.

What I?m trying to say here? Well, you see, the thing is that we can already learn a lot from each other in terms of experience and sharing common sense.

I guess so far we went wrong when it comes to this. At least I know I had. And off by a long-shot.

You see, trying to form the good habits for the sake of personal growth, and turning towards individualism more than anything else, we are losing a lot when it comes to learning the easy way.

Being more social, and being willing to accept an advice, or maybe just peek into someone else?s life just to have a picture of how others are going through this process, can result in sharing and learning what we already have out there.

Isn?t this the reason why such outlets as blogs and magazines that closely tackle the subject of personal growth in any aspect exist nowadays? My logic says so.

But the thing is that being true to individualism that is nowadays so dominant in the western culture, more often than not we tilt towards avoiding this interactions that can actually bring us a lot in terms of learning and forming good habits.

Adopting good habits from other people

good habits - exercise

Now thinking about it, the only thing that seems logical is to leverage this knowledge by accepting more and more from other people inwards.

Try and start with your circle, locate the ones that you think are going into the right direction and observe. Ask if you are more comfortable with it. Try and adopt as much as you can that you know can have a positive impact upon your life.

Recognize the traits you are lacking and find them in others. Then try and diagnose which are the things you can copy that can bring you there. If you find the good habits, try to implement them. It?s as simple as that.

I always say that we should hang out in circles whose definition closely matches our perception of success and wellbeing. Well, here you go ? this is another reason for that too.

Being in circles of like-minded people, we have better chance of finding habits that will more easily connect with our lifestyle, and fit like a glove if you will.

We can contribute a lot too as well. And with that interaction taking place, it?s just fair to add that we are forming a community in which we are constantly exposed to new and new good healthy habits, and that by learning and making that connection we are in fact growing substantially over time.

If you think that this can interfere with your personal growth and affect it negatively, you are off by a long-shot. It only enhances the product of individualism, and pushes you forward towards being more resourceful in general.

Think of it as collecting knowledge from others and bringing it back so you can process it better, while making the most out of it in the frame of individualism.

Soon before you know, you will acquire many new good habits, and then just refine them for yourself, while giving others in your circle the chance of learning from your example.

Do you want to keep that process of adopting good habits just for yourself, or you are more open to accept things from others and give something back too? I will be glad to hear about it from you, because individualism is spreading like a wildfire, and we would be much better if we find a way now, that will enhance it and render it from all the negative aspects, while giving us the chance to learn from each other.

Good habits can be learned, copied, serve as an example for others. What do you think about it?

National Education | EMU Sigma Nu

On the other hand those exist that believe that the citizens with deafness must learn the language of signals and the official language of its country only in the modality written and not in the verbal one. The Brazilian educational context the same adopts passage in relation to the mentioned communicative boardings. The education of the deaf people, in Brazil, had beginning during as the empire, with the arrival of the French educator Hernest Huet. In 1857, the National Deaf person-Dumb Institute was established, current National Institute of Education of the Deaf people (INES), that initially it used the language of signals, but that in 1911 it started to adopt pure oralismo. From this date, some Justinian codes for the attendance of said people had been created in Brazil ' ' deficientes' ' , reproducing the European models of the systems of boarding schools. Of 1905 the 1950, many of the institutions that had been created for the attendance of the deficient people were particular. In 1957, the education of ' ' deficientes' ' in a general way it was assumed in national level, for the federal government.

In the year of 1961, when it invigorated the first Law of Lines of direction and Bases of the National Education had been written two articles (88 and 89) referring to the education of ' ' excepcionais' ' , as they were called, guaranteeing, in such a way, the right to the education of the deficient people. Another important point of this Law is that, in article 89, the government if compromises in helping the not-governmental organizations to give educational services to these people. Already the Law of education 5692/71 for the education of 1 and 2 degrees make reference to reference the Special Education in only one article (article 9), leaving clearly that the State Advice of deficient education would guarantee to the special treatment in the schools.

Turkey strongly condemns trio church bombings in Nigeria

Turkey has strongly condemned trio of deadly church bombings on Sunday in Nigeria?s northern state of Kaduna, which, along with ensuing reprisal killings, left at least 70 people dead and over 100 wounded.

A radical Islamist sect on Monday claimed responsibility for Sunday's suicide attacks at two churches in the city of Zaria and another in the city of Kaduna that left 21 people dead, according to an initial count. But the Nigerian Red Cross said late Sunday that the death toll had jumped to 50, to include reprisal killings.

The reprisals highlight festering religious tensions in Nigeria, a nation of more than 160 million people. The attacks occurred in the religious flashpoint state of Kaduna that sits at the border between the country's predominantly Muslim north and its mainly Christian south. A history of attacks and counterattacks between the two communities means that authorities are often cautious about releasing death figures.

A statement released by the Turkish Foreign Ministry late on Tuesday reiterated Turkey?s earlier statements in which it expressed concerns over the escalating violence in the past six months in Nigeria. The statement said Turkey fears that the violence could be morphed into a religion-based conflict. ?

The Islamist Boko Haram sect is waging an increasingly bloody fight with Nigeria's security agencies and public. More than 580 people have been killed in violence blamed on the sect this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.

Churches have been increasingly targeted by violence in Nigeria. This is the third weekend in a row that Boko Haram is claiming responsibility for church attacks in central and northern Nigeria. Statements attributed to the group said they were responsible for church attacks in the first and second Sundays of June that killed at least 21 people.

Turkey also expressed ?deep concern? over retaliatory attacks on Muslim communities because of the bombings and called on religious communities in Nigeria to restore peace.

Turkey expressed condolences to the people of Nigeria and said Turkey will continue to stand by Nigerian state and people in its fight against every kind of extremism.

Boko Haram unleashed multiple attacks in northeastern Nigeria in a retaliatory attacks, killing at least 25 people on Tuesday.

'Catching Fire' Casting Rumors: Hunter Parrish Weighs In

'Weeds' actor, who was up for the role of Peeta in 'Hunger Games,' tells MTV News he'd 'love' to play Finnick in the sequel.
By Kara Warner

Our fellow "Hunger Games" fans will likely recall the fact that the casting process for the first film garnered more than a few headlines, particularly regarding the roles of Katniss, Peeta and Gale. Now that those roles have long been filled and the movie has gone on to break box-office records, we have been focused on the casting rumors around its sequel, "Catching Fire."

While Lionsgate hasn't made any announcements about who will join the cast for the sequel, particularly as fan-favorite character Finnick Odair, that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from churning out likely prospects. One of the fan-supported candidates is "Weeds" actor Hunter Parrish, who was also an early favorite to play Peeta until Josh Hutcherson won the role.

When MTV News caught up with Parrish recently to discuss the release of his first single, "Sitting at Home," we couldn't help but ask for his thoughts on the franchise and also being considered for Finnick.

"This whole 'Hunger Games' thing, man ... I've read all of the books, because I've been through this once before," Parrish said. "It was very exciting for me [to be considered] for the first movie, to be a part of that, and I read all of the books at that time, and I loved the script and the director and Jennifer Lawrence who was cast at that point. I saw it as something very exciting, and I was very excited about it, but it wasn't [meant to be]. Josh is also a friend of mine, and I haven't seen the film yet, but people say amazing things about it, and he's great, he's perfect. We've worked together before, and he's a great actor," Parrish said sincerely.

While Parrish is grateful for the fan support behind the Finnick campaign, his experience from the first round of casting has him feeling more cautious about things this time around.
