Males can Also Suffer from Breast Cancer | TopNews New Zealand

Males can Also Suffer from Breast CancerBreast cancer is a cancer that starts in the tissues of the breast. It is usually associated with women and is one of the most prominent types of cancer among them. But it seems that the perception that only women have to suffer from it is wrong as over 2,000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

Although there are just 1% cases in which males are affected with breast cancer, which amount to 20 cases annually, breast surgeon Dr Belinda Scott is of the view that men may be stronger carriers of the cancer gene. She said, "We think male breast cancer is probably going to have a genetic risk for it. It's quite different in that only 10 per cent of our females with breast cancer will carry the gene. A lot more, we think, of the men will have the gene". She also added that there have been enough tests conducted on men to find out the genetic aspect of cancer among men, but there are cases which depict that it is more common for men to have a genetic type of cancer. So the perception that only females suffer from breast cancer is totally misleading.
