I don?t know if Highlight, Glancee, Banjo, or any one of those other startups you?re now officially sick to death of hearing about are going to make it, but I know that for the first time in a long time, we?re starting to move in the right direction in terms of mobile innovation. And no, I don?t mean we need more people-stalking apps, I mean we need more passive use of our mobile phones. Less life lived looking down means more life actually lived. The trend that strikes me here as being important is not necessarily ?ambient location? or even "people finders" - that's just all we're capable of today. The real end game is engineering serendipity.

My Acceptance to ASU ? ASU Student Diaries

This story could be a long one?..so bear with me guys. There were two parts to it.
First, it all begins with Senior Project (SP).
Senior year of high school, oh boy, I can tell you the story about all that.

Bravely or ignorantly, I decided to work on writing a book for my SP.
SP was a lot of?commitment, including writing a 10 pages research paper, creating a product, and giving a speech/ presentation. The topic of SP was?absolutely?free of choice! Guess what I topic I picked?
?How to write a best-selling novel??

My First Novel

*Yeah most of you would ask me- why do I pick that topic? It?s so vague and it?s so much work. Tell you what, I asked myself that?sometimes?and even now I still can?t find the answer for it.*

Again, I?m a person with my words. Once I set up my mind to do something, I?ll give out all I got. Writing a book was something I really wanted to go back on my words. In the end, I spent a total about 135 hours on creating this book as my product when the requirement was only 15 hours. Still, even with my horrific grammar and punctuation, I couldn?t describe to you how much I love writing. I printed out my manuscript and printed and tape-bind at Fedex Kinkos. I even tried to sell it at school to my peers and family members. Nevertheless, I ended up only selling 5 copies.
Okay, now let me explain one of the two reasons why I got accepted to this school. My connection with ASU begins with SP, because my former mentor was the Program Coordinator, Mrs. Arlene Schler. I knew her back when I was a junior in high school, taking a SAT Prep. at ASU over the summer. (Of course, my SAT score still sucked big time because I just couldn?t speak English right.) She was very helpful in editing my story, revising, and?slowly draws out?the story line with me.
I met with her at ?the Columbia County Library every other Sunday. We would discuss my novel, and she would give me helpful advice and inspiration. However, not only was she a savior of my book, she was also the reason why I am here today.
Knowing my potential?outside?standardized?testing, Mrs. Schler visited the admission office a few times to check on my status and to recommend related personals about my qualities.

The late winter of 2009 was almost never-ending nightmare. Back then, I know for sure that if I don?t enter a university in America, I would have to go back to Taiwan, possibly working in a lower class job for the rest of my life. I was definitely not suited for the education back in NEHS- I cannot go back, they won?t take me.
Mrs. Schler has constantly kept her hands in prayer with me.

The second part to my acceptance to ASU was my- never going back on my words attitude.
Yes, I do admit that I?m a very forgetful person, possibly with ADD. Nevertheless, I work hard as much as I can, even if that means getting a kidney?failure. At the same time, I am fearless whither if it?s because I?m brave or I?m ignorant. Never was I afraid to ask, and never was I afraid to answer.

Instead of describing to you about what I did, I?ll just paste this email I sent to the admission office back on?Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 11:41 PM.

To Whom It May Concern:

This is Si-Long Chen.??I am currently an applicant of Augusta State University.??Recently, I have submitted my application online.??Nevertheless, I still want to provide you with more information about myself for you to further understand me as an individual applicant since there were neither essay sections nor short answer sections on your application.??And thus, I decide to send you this e-mail to offer you a clearer picture of me.

?On July 27th, 2006, my sister and I, with barely any English ability arrived in the United States for a higher education as international transfer students.??After leaving Taiwan, I began to explore myself through the art of creative writing.??I started my first story,?The Oranska?in October 2006 as a sophomore and completed it in spring 2007.??The Oranska?was a Chinese fantasy novel with 50 chapters, carrying more than two hundred pages.??After my first novel in Chinese, I challenged myself to write more stories in English, while all the other international transfer students were still struggling with basic English grammar and spelling.??Throughout high school years in the United State, I have completed several short stories and poems.

In my senior year of high school, I chose creative writing as my topic for my senior project.??I am currently working on my product, a forty pages English story,?The Heavenly Bird.??As unique as this story by itself,?The Heavenly Bird?is actually just one of the sections of my other long novel,?The War of the World?s End.??As my mentor, my SAT prep teacher, listened and understood what would take place in the novel, she said that?The War of the World?s End?is a novel that has a grand story line as Tolken?s?The Lord of the Ring.??Being able to create and actually write out such a huge story is not an ordinary task that any other international transfer students or even the Native speakers at my age posses.???

Besides writing, I am also very talented in drawing.??Starting when I was still in the ESOL (English to Speaker as Other Language) program, I have held the president position of Japanese Comic Club for 2 years in high school on top of other positions in SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and National Art Honor Society.??My creativity improves, as I further explore my mind of imagination.?You can see my drawings from this link: http://foxsilong.deviantart.com/

I have started up with pretty much no English when I first arrived in the United States.??However, as I keep on challenge myself, with just two and a half years of English training, I am now able to compose long English novels compiled more than forty pages.??As you can tell, this is a task that is even hard for the native speakers.??Not wanting to further sell myself, I just want to let you know that, I may not prove to be a strong applicant through the application and all the standardized tests that are required by your school; however, I am unique as an individual with a fast learning skill and a creative mind.??I know I will succeed in Augusta State University.

Every school I applied to has denied me by looking at my SAT scores. At that misery period of my life, when I saw the acceptance letter, tears of joy soaked my eyes. I felt that I was needed on this world for a purpose, and I felt that there are people who want me as who I am.

I couldn?t describe to you how much thank I have in Augusta State University and Mrs. Schler. Without her constant visits at the admission office, I probably wouldn?t be able to be accepted.

How to Make Your Company More Likable

The latest buzzword in our marketing vocabulary is ?likeability.? There has been a noticeable shift in the way companies communicate with customers. Social media and a renewed focus on service put unprecedented word-of-mouth power into the hands of our clients and customers. Big brands across the country are refocusing marketing efforts on becoming more likeable. While likeability is a new buzzword, it certainly is not a new concept. It?s actually one of the most basic rules of sales: People want to do business with those they like and trust.

Becoming ?likeable? sounds easy?and it is. Just think, in everything you do, ?how can we add value to the customer?? Answer that question in new and creative ways and you will be liked and trusted by customers and potential customers. Being likeable is a crucial part of your marketing and strategic planning.

Here are a few ways to add value and be likeable:

1. Be generous. Customers and potential customers are always looking for added value, and in most cases you can deliver this through free advice, education, product add-ons or complimentary services (like consultation). All companies should provide great website content that educates people on the business, product or service, or related industry topics. This content shouldn?t be all about sales. Always think about how to add value to your customers? lives. If you help them in some way, they will return the favor with their patronage.

2. Be transparent. Be open about your process and your product. Obviously, you don?t want to give away your ?secret sauce? or your entire strategic plan, but you can be transparent enough that your customers understand what you do and how your process helps them.

3.? Be social. Connect with people online in the right communities. For credibility purposes you may wish to have a company page on Facebook, but that might not be where your customers are talking about your services or products. If you are a B2B business, you should be on LinkedIn and connect with potential customers through targeted groups. If your industry has a lot of chatter on Twitter, or is an industry with rapidly evolving news and practices, Twitter might help you easily connect with new clients. At the very least, you should make all the content on your website and blog sharable with ?share this? buttons.

4. Be accessible. Customers should have access to more than just sales reps when they need something or have questions. In larger companies, they should have access to a director or VP-level decision maker. In smaller companies, they should be able to call the business owner directly. Being accessible to all your customers tells them that they are important and ensures that their needs are being met at every level of the company.

What Does Attachment Parenting Look Like? | Natural Family Today

There?s a lot of talk in the news media about Attachment Parenting lately, especially with celebrity-turned-PhD Mayim Bialik?s new book, Beyond the Sling, in which she describes her brand of parenting, which does include Attachment Parenting (AP). And there are a lot of questions being asked. As a local Resource Leader for Attachment Parenting International, I?ve been fielding both concern and applause for the various conversations swirling around Mayim and AP. I wanted to give a little clarification.

First of all, what is Attachment Parenting exactly? Technically, it?s a research-backed approach to parenting that promotes securely attached kids. What?s that mean? ?Attachment? is a term to describe the emotional bond between two people. A person with a secure attachment style is able to establish and maintain a healthy emotional bond with other people. A kid who is securely attached to his parent means that the kid and parent share a healthy emotional bond ? with all the give and take of any emotionally healthy relationship. People with secure attachment styles are less affected by stress and generally happier in relationships than those with insecure attachment styles.

Research shows that parents who raise children with secure attachment in mind do two things: They provide consistent and loving care, and they respond with sensitivity. This can look different for different people. For parents who are living the natural lifestsyle, this often takes the form of natural birth, breastfeeding and baby-led weaning, babywearing, cosleeping, stay-at-home parenting and gentle discipline. Of course, there are plenty of parents who do these parenting techniques who are not necessarily living a natural lifestyle, but there are also plenty of parents who bottle-feed and crib-sleep and work outside the home who are still raising their children with attachment-promoting strategies.

There are other parenting practices that are often considered part of AP, such as elimination communication, cloth diapering, not vaccinating, and homebirthing. This are wonderful options available to parents, but in terms of attachment research, they are not part and parcel with AP ? with the consistent and loving care and the responding with sensitivity that is documented by research to contribute directly to developing those emotionally healthy bonds that we?re striving to do. That?s not to say that parents who choose cloth diapering are not doing something really great for their kids; it?s saying that parents who choose to use disposable diapers can still be doing AP.

And this is awesome news ? that anyone can be AP ? because the more people raised to be able to have be able to have an emotionally healthy relationship, the better our world will be.

Pope arrives in Mexico, denouncing violence

LEON, Mexico ? Pope Benedict XVI landed in Mexico on Friday to throngs of faithful who gathered at the tarmac and lined more than 20 miles of his route into the city shouting the ultimate welcome: "Benedict, brother, you are now Mexican."

Many thought such a warm reception, complete with folkloric dance and mariachis, would not greet a pope some consider distant and academic. But the world's largest Roman Catholic, Spanish-speaking country showed Benedict the affection they had for this predecessor, John Paul II, who was dubbed "Mexico's pope" after making five trips to the country.

"This is a proud country of hospitality, and nobody feels like a stranger in your land," the pope said upon landing to wild cheers. "I knew that, now I see it and now I feel it in my heart."

After his Alitalia flight landed, the streets of Leon where the pope will stay took on a carnival atmosphere, with entire blocks exploding in yellow confetti as he passed in his bulletproof popemobile along the 20-mile (32-kilomter) route from the airport.

"He came to change all Mexicans," said Maria del Rosario Tamayo Villanueva, who waited to see the pope despite being paralyzed in both legs since childhood. "It was important to come to see him. He is a gift from God."

From the time the pontiff boarded his plane in Rome, he took on the subject of Mexican drug war violence that has killed more than 47,000 people in the last six years, saying it is "destroying humanity and our youth."

Benedict called on Mexicans to conquer a materialistic culture that feeds drug trafficking and said the church can be a healing force.

"The great responsibility of the church is to educate the conscience, teach moral responsibility and strip off the mask (from) the idolatry of money that enslaves mankind, and unmask the false promise, this lie that is behind" the drug culture, he said.

He also urged Cuba, where he heads on Monday, to leave behind a Marxism that "no longer responds to reality."

Benedict has spoken out before against drug trafficking, Marxism and authoritarianism in Latin America, including during his 2007 trip to Brazil, his first to the region.

On Friday Mexican President Felipe Calderon and first lady Margarita Zavala greeted the pope at the Guanajuato International Airport in Silao and escorted him along a red carpet amid a clanging of church bells.

Benedict descended the stairs without the cane he had used when he walked to the plane in Rome, the first time he had walked with it in public.

In a tarmac speech, Benedict referred again to the everyday violence that ordinary Mexicans confront, saying he was praying for all in need "particularly those who suffer because of old and new rivalries, resentments and all forms of violence."

He said he was coming to Mexico as a pilgrim of hope, to encourage Mexicans to "transform the present structures and events which are less than satisfactory and seem immovable or insurmountable while also helping those who do not see meaning or a future in life."

Calderon greeted the pontiff by saying, "Your visit fills us with joy in moments of great tribulation."

Some like 42-year-old housewife Celia del Rosario Escobar said she had high hopes that Benedict would help turn around a society devastated by the drug trade and the brutal violence related to it.

"I would like that he changes the conscience of those people who are doing harm to Mexico with everything involved in drug addiction, in the mafia," Escobar said. "I hope that we have more respect for life."

Many see the pope's Latin America trip as a way to strengthen the faithful in a region where Catholicism has dropped over the decades, though not as dramatically as in Europe and elsewhere.

"One sees in Latin America and also elsewhere, not a few Catholics who have a schizophrenia between individual and public morality," the pope said earlier on the plane. "These individuals are Catholic, believers, but in their public lives they follow other paths that don't correspond to the great values of the Gospel ... so we must teach not just in individual morals but public morals."

Benedict acknowledged the historic nature of John Paul's first trip to Mexico ? the first by any pope. The 1979 visit, just months after being elected pope and his first foreign trip, came at a time in which Mexico's anti-religion laws were so restrictive that John Paul was technically breaking the law by wearing clerical garb in public.

John Paul also made a historic visit to Cuba in 1998, where upon his arrival in Havana he pronounced the now-famous words: "May Cuba, with all its magnificent potential, open itself up to the world, and may the world open itself up to Cuba."

Benedict told reporters those words remain true even today, and that John Paul's visit had launched a path of "collaboration and constructive dialogue" in Cuba that continues, albeit slowly.

"I can't talk," she said as she brought both hands to her chest and cried.

In Mexico, Benedict said, violence is destroying the nation's young.

It is a message that Enrique Abundes, one of thousands lining the papal route, was waiting to hear. The 46-year-old shoe-factory worker and father of five said he believed Benedict would inspire Mexicans to keep their children away from the temptations of organized crime.

"The pope's visit to our city will call attention to the violence and, for us, to be good examples to our children," he said.

The weeklong trip to Mexico and Cuba, Benedict's first to both countries, will be a test of stamina for the pope, who turns 85 next month. At the airport on Friday in Rome, the pope used a cane, apparently for the first time in public, as he walked about 100 yards (meters) to the airliner's steps.

Papal aides, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Benedict has been using the cane in private for about two months because it makes him feel more secure, not for any medical reason. Last fall, Benedict started using a wheeled platform to navigate the vast spaces of St. Peter's Basilica during ceremonies. The Vatican has said that device was employed to help the pope save his energy.

Many businesses and schools had closed for the day in Leon, and thousands of people were traveling in on buses from across the country. But the city was still not at full capacity on Friday.

Still about 30 percent of the city's 6,000 hotel rooms were still empty, said Fabiola Vera, president of the Association of Hotels and Motels of Leon. She said people may have been discouraged by rumors that there weren't enough rooms.

The main campground in Leon, meant for tens of thousands of pilgrims, remained empty earlier in the day.

Church officials say as many as 300,000 people are expected for Sunday's Mass.

"We greeted him with much affection and love because he is the messenger of peace," said Antonio Alcaraz, 40, director of a public school. "His visit through his message, will improve our social problems."
